I always find it interesting when two sisterships get split up, and how they change differently from then on. One example I noticed recently was the Starward and Skyward. The Starward looks so well taken care of as the Orient Queen, looking maybe the best she ever has, while the poor Skyward has been bastardized in the Far East as the Leisure World, with ungainly additions and a horrific paint job...

What is also interesting is the fact that Leisure World w/that apartment block (or cattle deck) attached to her aft decks does not have a sponson at the stern while still graceful one does.

Another example is FAIR PRINCESS AND DAWN PRINCESS...former Cunard/Sitmar sisters.

FAIR PRINCESS became CHINA SEA DISCOVERY. Neglected and in horrible condition in the Far East.

DAWN PRINCESS became ALBATROSS. In prestine condition until the day she was sold for scrap

The Skyward was the very first ship I cruised on, that is sad

Mal, I was wondering the same thing too - can't find any info online. One can only assume it is some sort of revenue-producing space.

I would have put balconied suites there myself

My wife and I sailed on Skyward twice. Great cruises despite losing all power while at sea for a few hours on one trip. We called her the "Smoke Boat" and wrote new lyrics to the Love Boat theme to amuse ourselves while waiting in lines aboard... People like to SMOKE on board her like no other ship I've ever been on.... and I've been on plenty! There were MANY, MANY lines to wait in as NCL packed her solid. Still she had a real charm and her crew always seemed happy and team oriented. I also think it's a damn shame to see these modifications to an otherwise VERY smart looking ship.

The aft block houses the casino, while the glass hut on the deck above is the food court. There are some pictures in a Yahoo! Group.

When Starward was rebuilt in in the 80s, the resturant was moved aft on the deck with aft facing windows, the part that looks like a navigation bridge. With normal pitching, this would be exaggerated to the dining room now at the very aft position of the deck. The 'ducktail' was added in attempt to lengthen the waterline and produce more stability to the stern. It also reduced the 'wag' some sterns exhibit when under way.

The Skyward did not get the same refit. The Skyward's refit in Jacksonville FLorida, was interrupted by a fire. Therefore the 'ducktail' was not added to Skyward.
