Here are a couple of pictures of my latest scratch build project, this time I have build a model of the Angelina Lauro.
For fun and for something different I decided to build a micro model, the overall length is 9,5 cm which is roughly scale 1: 2060. I was interested to see how this scale differs from my usual scale 1:600, actually besides the size it is not that much different. Once I calculated which thickness of cardboard I had to use I could approach the model the same as I do with my 600 scale. Obviously this scale is not suited for super detailing (and somehow I did not feel the need for that) however I was surprised that I could capture the essence of the ship quite easily. Another plus is that it only took four evenings to build the model. I also made a water diorama base but I do not have pictures of that yet.
(see picture with scalpel for size reference)
I’m thinking of building some other ships as well in this micro scale, Eugenio Costa, Oceanic, Norway, Statendam, Rotterdam.

Thanks for the complements, indeed it would be great to make a whole fleet of ships, but as always accurate deck plans are needed for accurate modeling (in any scale) Also ships that are under 150 meters in length would be difficult to build, there wouldn’t be much left actually (I probably would accidentally toss it in the bin with other modeling debris)

Johan, I only got the ORANJE as a commercial paper model (de grote drie model plate) building a scratch build model of the ORANJE would be interesting, especially with the characteristic wide hull which gave her the nickname “pregnant lady”. I also gave this small Angelina Lauro that hull. The pictures don’t show it that well but when you look at the model for real you can see the sagging hull.
Nice pictures Russ.
