Now if you could only take a shower in Europe w/real water pressure I would be thrilled!
Europe is of course very heterogen - you will find a different situation in Greece than in Austria - where the water supply is in any aspect FAR superior to everything I have encountered in the U.S. - in Vienna we have mineral water coming out of the tap (litterally - the whole city is supplied by water from mountain springs - no chlorine - water I buy here in bottles is of worse quality) and the pressure is actually pretty high - certainly higher than what is usually found in the U.S.
"Standard of Living" is of course very, very subjective. Nevertheless, for many people things like availability of goods and certain services are a measure for that - and things have changed a lot in Europe during the last years - some regions even exceed the U.S. in what would have been found in the U.S. only some years ago. (...not that I like all of that...)

Water on ships is often chemical tasting, as it is in many cities, but by and large it's OK to drink.. as a mixer
Water pressure? never had a problem there in general, seems no different to me here or in the US? It would depend on individual areas and even down to properties I imagine.

Seriously - neither the U.S. nor Europe are homgenouse (concering water supply or other things) - whereas there are still many 'poor' regions in Europe some regions are not only catching up but offer an extremly high quality of living - which of course is very subjective.

The problem w/some of our toilets today is that they are required to be a 1.6 gallon flush. Years ago they used quite a bit more water and many older homes still have the older units. Many plumbers love the new ones as they get calls to clear the blockages. Where I live in the hills the water pressure is actually to high and we need several pressure regulators to restrict it. The pressure needs to be high to get water to homes in the hills and canyons here in L.A.. If the regulators fail, our metal sprinkler heads can literally shoot high into the air when the systems comes on-making our garden look like a water park. As for showers, the BEST showers I ever had were in Australia w/those cool rain type shower nozzles.
Pam the incoming main on my house is 3/4" and most of the branches in the house are 1/2". Pressure is usually around 40 psi
