Smoke is shot up and lowers from heat, shot up at an angle the ship is going with the wind helps trail the smoke farther (going with the wind or againts) at a degree smoke will be pushed farther by the wind from ship speed at low or high speeds...
New ships do not have to think about a funnel being slanted since ships produce less smoke and in some ships the smoke "pipes" are slanted in a strait funnel.. Or you could use some kind of wind guard like in QE2 that pushes smoke up by wind force at the base or like on SS France / SS Norway that has wings on the top of funnels glide the wind and smoke away but for that to work they must be cruising at a semi high speed...
I wander why QM2 has this ???
