Looks like Star Cruises is finally ordering a new ship for themselves according to Cruise Industry News. If the reported capacity of 3,364 at double occupancy, this would make it smaller than the NORWEGIAN BREAKAWAY. Perhaps an updated Superstar Sagittarius II design that was never built?

Waynaro,

I was actually wondering the same. Your above image reminded me...A couple years back NCL placed an order/LOI for a ship with a very similar design but was subsequently cancelled:

This ship was to be 89,000 Gross tons... Slightly smaller than the Jewel-Class.

I'm looking forward to what Star designs for this market.

Thanks for recalling my memory. I completely forgot about that particular NCL ship. I believe that cancelled order resulted in the Norwegian Epic, correct?

Nope. I think she got cancelled because NCL got taken over by Star and then Star transferred their own newbuilds under construction at Meyer to NCL.

Ralph, the newbuild(s) that Brian posted about were actually LOI'd with Aker Finland in 2003 or 2004. NCL opted to extend the number of units in the Dawn/Jewel class in lieu of these as Meyer and the German gov't could and would guarantee the export credit financing.

I seem to recall I heard the Aker design ultimately did not meet some of the pending/future safety requirements and NCL decided not to pursue it for that reason. Plus as Tim said the Germans had good financial terms available to encourage the order.
