Hi Joe

Information was published on my 'cruisingtalk' website some weeks ago.

Louis Cruises are also laying up the Louis Majesty for this winter.

The US goverment recently recended the ban for US citizen from going to Cuba. Maybe on a limited basis.
I'll bet that the cruise lines are looking at this very carefully. Seems to me cruisers would be first on the list to go there. And the Cubans would welcome the US $$$$$$. Cigars anyone??

Being born in 1981 and not seeing the cold war, I cant understand why the US still wants to prevent all travel and ties with Cuba.

Surely in this day and age the US and Cuba should get on and allow tourism.

Its a pity allot of the major cruise lines have connections with the US as if they didnt it could mean more ships visiting Cuba.

Fred. Olsen ships have been calling at Cuba for several years, mainly Havana, I think. This is mainly on their Caribbean fly-cruises, but not those that also call at a US port during the same cruise!

Not just mere connections, most major cruise lines have their headquarters or corporate headquarters in the US. Carnival Corp., Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, Norwegian Cruise Line, Prestige Cruise Holdings, and Disney. The only "major" company without their corporate headquarters in the US is MSC Cruises.

If you are really interested in learning more about US relations with Cuba, and why restrictions still exist today, come to Miami and speak with some of it's citizens. Many Miamian's have roots in Cuba and very strong feelings in regards to Castro. It's much more complicated than you obviously realize.

Thanks, Ernie, I've been resisting the urge to jump into this thread because I'm so close to the situation. I realize that most people around the world, even most people in the US, don't understand the Cuban thing. After living here in Miami for 31 years, amidst a million Cubans (literally), most of whom are exiles, I've got a very thorough understanding of the politics. Most of the people in my life were either born in Cuba or born to Cuban exiles.

Yes, the cruise lines would love to gear up and go to Cuba, should the Embargo be lifted, and there would be millions of potential customers longing to go. But with the political situation as it currently is, I don't see that happening. It's much more than politics, too, it's the entire human rights thing and the way people are forced to live under the regime. All these international visitors to the resorts along the beaches do not see that, since most all contact is banned.

I certainly don't want to get embroiled in a political arguement, but it is totally incorrect to say that almost all contact is banned. Any guest at the resorts has the total freedom, at any time, to walk, ride a bike, take a bus or hire a taxi anywhere you want to go, including unrestricted access to stroll Havana. Friends rented a motor bike this winter and travelled the entire Island with not a single problem or security check. I've been amazed that almost 800,000 Canadians headed there last winter, joining folks from all over Europe, and unlike other vacation destinations, there were no reported problems making into our press.

Like I said I am at an age where I do not know the history of Cuba. I also live in a country that is nowhere near Cuba and I dont beleive we have much to do with Cuba.

I am guessing for US citizens there are complications for them to even visit the country. I assume it is illegal for them to go to a third country and book a trip to Cuba with a cruise line that is not linked to the US???

On the other side on my travels I have met British cruise ship passengers who have been and are keen to go again.

There are actually charter flights from the US directly to Cuba from Los Angeles, Miami, and NY. Because restrictions were recently eased by the Obama administration, more cities with direct charter flights to Cuba have been approved. They include Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Dallas, Fort Lauderdale, Houston, New Orleans, San Juan, and Tampa. In fact the major US airline I work for will be operating charter flights from Atlanta to Havana, and crews are receiving the necessary additional training now. If I still lived in Atlanta I would be interested in working some of these flights. They will likely be "turns", meaning no overnights in Havana.

Cuban-Americans can travel to Cuba freely without restriction, and the recent easing of restrictions for the general population includes religious, academic, and professional travel and the return of people-to-people educational exchanges.

Scheduled commercial airline travel from the US to Cuba is still restricted, but the dedicated charters from the cities I mentioned earlier are permitted.

Not everyone is supportive of the easing of these restrictions, mostly Cuban-Americans for a variety of reasons.

Correct me if I got this wrong. Castro embraced his dealings with the USSR and missiles were placed just 90 miles from the US.
Cuban missile crisis (early 1960s.) Came close to nuclear war.
Many Cuban refugees invaded south Florida living in tent cities and under the highway bridges.
Some political, criminal and other bad Cubans ousted by Castro. Others fled As well from the communist regime set up by Castro.
Hence our relations with Cuba have been poor since then.
Castro and his brother still run the goverment there. I have heard that conditions there are like going back to the 50s/60s with old cars, etc.
Yes tourism is there but can you imagine how it would be if the cruise lines and all US citizens could go there??
I'd venture to say even if you get to go there now you'd need a very good reason.
