This is our first cruise and we decided to make this one a family holiday. Our children are 3 and 5 years old. We are taking the Mexican Riveria for 11 days in November and are wondering if anyone has info on what to do in port for the family? Also when we have formal night and the kids want to come do they have to dress formal? If not what is appropriate? Any other comments on the boat are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Michelle, Welcome to Cruise Talk. First of all I need to clarify something for you, the Rhapsody of the Seas is not a boat it's a ship - there is a difference. You can put a boat on a ship but you can't put a ship on a boat. Be sure to go to the port talks on the ship they will answer a lot of your questions about what to do in Mazatlan, Acalpulco, etc. Definitely try to see the cliff divers in Acalpulco, and there is a wonderful local restaurant in Mazatlan that is very good and safe called Doney's. Also check out the open market place in Mazatlan - If your ship stops at Manzanillo, check out Las Hadas resort - it's incredible - not much else to see worthwhile in Manzanillo. The kids will have their own evening planned by children / youth counsellors - so the two of you can enjoy the evening together. Royal Caribbean is a first class operation and I know you'll have a wonderful time as a family! Smooth Seas

Michelle, we always take our kids on cruises. They are 4 and 5 1/2 years old. We usually feed the kids at alternative dining (buffet) or in cabin and then schedule late dinner for us. On formal nights, we dress our son in blue blazer, khaki's and tie, and our daughter wears a frilly dress with her black patent shoes. We then go have "cocktails" together (shirley temple for the kids of course) and have a great time dancing and listening to music for an hour or so. We even attend the captain's party together and get the requisite photos. For all you naysayers... of course we do not let the children run around the party or dance floor disrupting other passengers. Then, for the kids, it's either off to the cabin for jammies and a babysitter, or sometimes we let them attend the evening kids activities while we go to dinner. This has worked well for us. When the kids get older, we'll all eat together in the dining room. At this age, a 2-3 hour dinner is not any fun for our kids.
Hope this answers your question.

Hi Barryboat, in view of the above comment, maybe you should change your handle to 'Barryship'?

Michelle Berg, Hey, I was just being funny - and was not at all offended - give me a break In honor of your clever idea Malcolm - I have a new "temporary" username. Barryship doesn't seem to sound as good as Barryboat but hey, I'll give it a try.
