Japan Airlines will be the first to receive the new composite 787 .
I for one will not fly on this plane as I have seen problems with carbon fibre composite materials.
They do not take to impact stress. We have used this stuff in R/C model aircraft and stress cracks and failures happen due to hard landings and over stresses put on the aircraft.
With severe turbulence and hard landings I'm sure the same issues will arise with this plane.IMHO.
I'm sure Boeing has done tests but what happens over time?
Even Aluminum undergoes stress cracks as we have seen structure failures on current aircraft.
Heat and cold can be a factor as planes can leave an airport at 100 degrees+(Phoenix) and then go to 35K feet where temps maybe 60 degrees below 0.
Ernst ,what do you think????

Boeing does some of their low altitude flight testing over the Stait of Juan de Fuca, just off the Victoria waterfront. From my work site I've seen the 787 and the new 747-8 quite a few times, and while there have been problems, they both look great! I've seen the IMAX film about the development of the aircraft, and I would not have an issue boarding one. Looks like I might even get a trip in an A380 this winter.

Actually the composite skin proved to be much stronger than the older aluminium skins and much lighter so they save fuel too, I like the design of the B787 altough my altime favorite remains the B747, I really like the new 747-8 design, any got me a few million dollars so I can buy one ???

Actually Frosty, ANA (Al Nippon Airways) is the launch customer for the 787, not JAL. The 787 is truly a revolutionary airframe and one which Boeing literally bet the company on. As we move years down the road I believe it is the 787 which will ultimately outdistance Boeing from Airbus (again). The A380 will likely go down financially as a loser for Airbus. I believe they are still way below their break-even point. Although the 787 has been mired with several delays, I believe this is a testament to the design, analysis, and how rigorous the certification process is for an aircraft.

What we really don't know yet is what a high cycle aircraft will do when it is nearly all composite. There have been many examples of composite aircraft in general aviation, however nothing with this large of an application. All in all, I think the 787 has the chance of going down as the greatest aircraft Boeing ever built.....but time will tell.

If it ain't Boeing, I'm not going!

I also recall that the outsourcing of so many B787 components caused far longer delays/assembly issues. I agree, it is an amazing plane and nice looking too!

I can hardly wait to board one of those 787's. I'm sure the big plane is a far higher grade of material than a model plane.

Barry, I don't think there are many types of carbon fibres from mfrs. The biggest factor is weight and strength. I don't know the source that Boeing uses for their aircraft.
These days China seems to supply the world with everything. Some good but mostly questionable.eg look at some of the recalls on toys containing lead, etc.
Granted I have seen poor Lithium Polymer batteries, super glues, and some models(R/C )Almost ready to fly ). that come from China.
I refrain from buying this stuff. I build my models from scratch or kits(a box of wood)
I hope the carbon fibre doesn't come from there.
Just my opinion.

I can't imagine BOEING hit up some little untested carbon fiber dealer on a street corner in China and then slapped together an untested passenger airliner then turned around and pimped it out to the worlds major air carriers. Somehow I have faith BOEING actually has tested this before they put it in the air?

It will be 3-4 years before Boeing knows whether the 787 will be a profitable programme for it. There are long-term business effects from the way that the early aircraft were sold, and Boeing has a lot of financial tightrope to walk yet to get the programme back onto solid ground.

In addition, the entire construction philosophy is being re-thought. That's been the source of the bulk of the delays - rather more than the design issues. Boeing thought that it could sell the aircraft cheaply by nailing down the prices for contracts from suppliers from all around the world who would deliver bits that Boeing would just "snap together" in final assembly. But in this industry, if the suppliers find they can't deliver, it's Boeing's problem even more than the suppliers', as Boeing can't just go out and buy another set of screwdrivers or another length of timber from a different hardware store.
