Innovative design for Elyros...

It was reported on several greek forums and on Hellenic Ship Lovers group that the latest anek's aquisition, namely the Elyros is undergoing a huge refit as she is going to be how the rendring above shows her. In other words, the current funnel and bridge will be removed to be replaced by new decks, a rccl type funnel and a new wheelhouse. Very interesting surely, but we can be doubtful about this rendering. But who knows now, as Grimaldi partially owns ANEK.

I have been watching the comments made as it seemed rather an ambitious project; but one always wonders as the Greeks can do anything Initially photos just showed some extra steel plates being added atop and I wondered if that was going to be all, but more recent photos, see here, does look as though major work is underway with various bits having been removed and the scaffolding added. Most interesting?

If she turns out anything like the renderings she will look very good indeed. I think so anyway, but we'll have to wait and see

A selection of images from Sept to Dec is here.

There is a new photo on Apostoloss photos which is annoying me I cannot tell if the bridge has been moved forward and still attached behind the new steel side, or whether it has been taken off in one piece and now sitting on the dock [or something] the other side of her? Whichever way I look at it something seems not quite right somewhere. Do you know what is happening Lucas?

well, finally it does not seem that she will how it is on the renderings.

I remember it was said that the wheelhouse would be removed to be replaced by a new one, but on this pic I saw the same wheelhouse, it was just move forward, closer to the bow of the ship.
The bow side ramp was closed, and think the same work will be done with the stern side one.
After that, I am wondering what they will do with the funnel, if they will replace it by a new one or keep it as it is now.
Anyway, I am not saying that she will be an ugly but I am very curious to see the final result. This conversion seems really exciting.

I think there was more than a bit of Poetic 'Free-License' with those renderings. The imagination of the Greek Conversion 'specialists' seems to have run riot. You can follow some of the work on Fakta om Fartyg, but the lates photos here and here seem to show a tendancy for a rather creative use of defunct containers

I love these Greek conversions of Japanese ferries

The Japanese ferries are usually pretty good-looking to start with, but they are always a bit odd (without lifeboats and with side-ramps). The Greeks then add something "extra" which makes for very interesting vessels IMHO. It would be nice to see one of these on the North Sea for a change.

The ELYROS seems to be one of the more extensive conversions in recent years, certainly a project that I am following with great interest!

One of my main interests is that of the Greek passenger shipping industry. The history of Greek ferry operations is truly fascinating and although the demise of former English Channel stalwarts in Greek waters is very sad, personally I find the current Greek ferry scene extremely vibrant and exciting. Similarly to rd77, I too have a passion for Japanese built ferries which have been rebuilt in Greece. Two good examples of recent extensive Greek rebuilds of Japanese built ferries are the ANDREAS KALVOS of ANMEZ and the very impressive ARIADNE of Hellenic Seaways. Following the conversion of these vessels on FoF and Apostolos is fascinating - especially as one generally does not know what the completed ship will look like. ANEK's ELYROS project is indeed taking the Greek shipbuilding art to another dimension. It will indeed be interesting to see if the completed ferry resembles the artists impression, but she will doubtless be an important vessel for the Greek shipping industry nonetheless.
