There was a time when cruising appealed to the active over 65s and their parents or as someone else cruelly put it; the average age onboard cruise ships was deceased!
Many of todays cruise lines are attempting to attract a younger crowd, and in response the average age of a cruise passenger is falling.
Fred. Olsen Cruises still appeal to the older age group. However, if you look at this image from their 79/80 brochure, you quickly realise that they would never carry images of of passengers quite as old (and non-photogenic) as some of these, in their 2005 brochure:
Image: Neither young or sexy!
Notice that none of the pictures shows anyone younger couples or young singles.
Cruise brochures today often use images of people of almost indeterminate age. They are attractive, but neither old nor young. The men have a full head of hair, the women have great figures. They are often difficult to assign an age too.
Sex
The term sex sells has of course gained popularity simply because all sorts of products have been sexed up in an attempt to boost sales. For example, in the UK ice cream used to be mainly regarded as a children food, until Hagan-Daz sexed it up very successfully, and sold it to adults by the ton.
Well today I visited my local travel agent and picked up a cruise brochure, only to find that cruising has now gone sexy, too!
Image: Definately very sexy!
Well I've rushed and booked a cruise! Can you guess which ship/line?

Why, does much sex take place on these ships?
Hmm I wonder what Mrs. M thinks about you scanning those "sexy" pictures
I'm not silly enough to tell her! I did show here the picture of the woman in her knickers and she said that it was enough to put her 'off' ever cruising on that cruise ship.
Yes, it's Ocean Village.

What is the name of this ship and the Cruise Line?

Yes cruising went sexy a long time ago. Just take a look at these fine dancers on the Zenith back in 1992. Pretty racy...you probably wouldn't find girls in costumes like that in the days of the trans-Atlantic liners, or even the early days of cruising in the late 60's early 70's.
I collect cruise brochures and have seen many changes over the years in advertisements. Royal Caribbean, for example went from showing images of the ships to showing very few images of the ships...trying to change the perspective of cruising from ship life to destinations. Now they are using activities as a draw...like rock-climbing, ice skating, jet skiing, etc.

Geez! And I thought "Sweet Elegance" on QE2 in the 1970's was tacky. These gals make them look like nuns.

In costumes like that?Yes, of course, SS FRANCE in the 60's:
...and even more daring or saucy, again aboard SS FRANCE in the 60's:

I've heard that the going rate those days was only $30 per week for such a job. Still I suppose it was all that you could afford to pay!
malcolm....funny
That job was eventually given to the Steiners that were off-duty.

Brian O : you know the Italian TV then ?
Since the Naughty Nineties, Plumes etc have always been associated with carefree entertainment...tacky ? well, if it is pleasant and good ...

No. I was just reminded of something I read in a book on liners (can't remember which one) where the author described the difference between between Italian Line ships and Cunard ships of the 50's and 60's. On Italian Line ships the cabin stewardesses all looked like Sophia Loren while on Cunard they looked like Margaret Rutherford.
