Holland America Line celebrated the keel laying of its new 2,650-guest Pinnacle Class ship on Aug. 22 at Fincantieri's Marghera shipyard in Italy. A 680-ton block was lowered by crane into the yard's building dock, marking the official beginning of construction. The 99,500-gross-ton ship is scheduled for delivery in February 2016.

The event was attended by Holland America Line's Keith Taylor, senior vice president, fleet operations and Cyril Tatar, vice president, newbuild and technical operations.

"The keel laying of our new Pinnacle Class vessel heightens the anticipation for delivery because very soon we'll see the ship begin to take shape," said Stein Kruse, president and CEO of Holland America Line. "As the largest ship ever built for Holland America Line, the vessel features many innovations and new features, and we're excited to see it all come together over the next year and a half."

The ship will showcase decors by leading hospitality designer Adam D. Tihany, based in New York City, and designer and architect Bjorn Storbraaten, based in Oslo, Norway.

I went to Google to see if there were pinnacle images in the data bank. Not sure which is which.

Does anyone know what the final product will look like?

Not sure what you Googled for, as there are a number of renderings floating around. However, it IS very hard to tell the new ship apart from the existing ships indeed

and a better one:

Nothing too exciting as you can see

Jeff

As you are not paying for the ship why do you complain about the design when it has not even entered service yet or been on a cruise ?

To my mind the only company at present building some smart looking new cruise ships is Viking Ocean Cruises who do not go in for amusements parks with a hotel on a pontoon which in many cases carry too many people and completely stretch the facilities at most of their ports of call !

The present the HAL cruise ships, although larger than the new Viking cruise ships, are also very conservative in their classic design with no Zip Wires etc.
..

It's being reported that the ship's name will be Koningsdam.

Although based on a aging Vista-class platform, at least the've decided to give this ship a new funnel design. That's something to visually distinguish it from the cookie-cutter fleet of HAL ships.

And it's also nice to see a real Dutch name rather than another ridiculous name like "Eurodam." I was fully expecting HAL to name future ships "Caribdam," "Mexidam," and "Asiadam." And they'd probably have a whole class of ships with Alaskan names like "Glacierdam," "Kenaidam," "Juneaudam," Sitkadam," and "Alaskadam."

The name is an excellent choice (and it probably means that HRH King Willem-Alexander has accepted the invitation to christen the ship).

Quite some alterations to the exterior of the ship compared to earlier renderings. Improvements in my opinion, but the "bulge" of decks above the bridge is still way too high.

Interesting there are a lot of changes to the design versus the model.

One funnel vs. two

They changed the superstructure removing the bulge out bits

They lowered the paint line on the hull to create the large white stripe forward

All in all it is still a bit of a cookie cutter design with a top hat. I wish they had gone with another Statendam as the name seems a bit odd and not as easy to roll off the tongue for the average traveler. Will they says Kings-dam or try and pronounce all the letters which will end up being Kan-ings -dam.....

I don't think HAL ever released an official model or rendering until this week. Most people were just guessing based on something they saw in a video or on another site.

Joe,

The model was not official indeed, but this earlier rendering was actually released by HAL, I think:

HAL's Koningsdam microsite is now live: http://koningsdam.hollandamerica.com/

One thing that's already been observed from the deck plans is confirmation that although there will be a continuous wrap-around promenade deck, most of this will be - shall we say - "sheltered from the elements" by the lifeboats at the level of this deck rather than suspended above it.

It seems that bookings open on 1 December 2014.

Cruise Weekly has said that her maiden cruise will sail from Rome. Reportedly, she "will operate seven-night itineraries before repositioning to Rotterdam for formal naming ceremonies. The northern summer will see the vessel cruising in the Baltic and Northern Europe region."
