Artania Gets a Makeover
Posted on Jun 4th, 2014 with tags Artania, cruise, engine replacement, Lloyd Werft, News by topic, Phoenix, Shiprepair, upgrade.
The 44,588 GT cruise liner, the biggest in the Phoenix fleet, is returning to Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven at the end of September.
Artania Gets a MakeoverThe upgrades include new engines, a new Diesel generator, new balconies for 152 cabins, new suppressors, the modernisation of the fresh water system and extensive repairs and drydock work.
“Artania” will arrive on September 27, and go back into service on December 6.
The ship will be in the big Kaiserdock II for 60 days. The rest of the time will be taken up with sea-trials.
The work centres on the complete replacement of the ship’s engine plant. Her old Pielstick Diesels Type PC4-2 are being replaced by four more efficient new Type 12V32 main engines from Wärtsilä.
Four intermediate transmission units are also being installed between the existing gearing units and the new main engines. The “Artania” will also get a new Wärtsilä Type 8L32 auxiliary Diesel.
The four old main engines will be removed through the opening in the hull and the new Diesels installed.
At the same time the new suppressors will be installed, the entire on-board fresh water system will be modernised and an extensive programme of steel repairs will be carried out along with the installation of balconies for 152 cabins on Decks 7 and 8.
Lloyd Werft built balconies onto 96 cabins on Decks 5 and 6 during the ship’s earlier conversion in April/May 2011.
The yard will also carry out extensive annual drydocking which will include regular maintenance work on the ship’s rudder plant and propellers prior to the first test of her new engine plant in the North Sea in mid November.

I don't really understand where those extra balconies are going to be placed. There is some space left on Deck 8 potentially (below the funnel), but Deck 7???

It is highly likely that they will fill in the teired decks at the stern and possibly replace open deck space at the top of the ship with cabins somewhat like Cost Romantica.

Looking again it can only be Decks 7 and 8 at the stern, Deck 7 under the bridge and replacing the area with the circular pool and associated public spaces aft of it with cabins but I just can't see 152 balcony cabins going into that space?

Has been suggested elsewhere that the 152 new balconies will involve renewal of the existing cabin balconies on decks 7 and 8 rather than 152 new cabins with balconies on those decks.

My understanding is now that the lifeboats will be positioned one deck lower (on new davits), allowing for almost an entire deck of new balconies.

Is there a rendering anywhere? Lowering the lifeboats might make her nice prom darker but perhaps she will have newer/larger and less lifeboats than she has now.

I expect it will be similar to Prinsendam / Royal Viking Sun.

Ernst, information about the balconies is changing all the time. Now I've read that apparently there are already are exactly 152 existing balconies on decks 7 and 8, so it seems the refit will involve simply replacing the existing balconies. Let's wait and see!
