(1:52 p.m. EDT) -- Celebrity Cruises has canceled the remainder of Celebrity Millennium's Alaska sailing, after failing to resolve mechanical issues that stranded the ship in Ketchikan late Sunday. The line is providing chartered air out of Ketchikan, as well as a full refund and 100 percent future cruise credit.

"Our engineers, along with expert consultants from the motor's manufacturer, and our Marine Operations team in Miami, have continued working around the clock to resolve the mechanical issues onboard Celebrity Millennium," Cynthia Martinez, director of global corporate communications for Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., told Cruise Critic. Royal Caribbean is the parent company of Celebrity.

"Together, they have been doing everything they can to fully determine the root cause of the problem. Regrettably, as of this time, they have been unable to find a satisfactory solution that would enable the ship to continue with its sailing."

Chartered flights, leaving directly from Ketchikan, will begin departing tomorrow, August 21. The line is flying in 30 members of its guest services team to help with arrangements.

All passengers will be given a full refund of their cruise fares, as well as a 100 percent future cruise certificate worth the cruise fare paid for the sailing.

Last week Millennium was stranded in Seward for four days after problems with a "propulsion unit."

We have some friends who were sailing to Alaska on Celebrity.I believe this was their cruise. They had the land package after the cruise.
Is the Mille the only Celebrity ship doing Alaska??

Apparently they are sending the MILLENNIUM all the way back to the Grand Bahama Shipyard for repairs, so the rest of her Alaska season has been scrapped as well as her repositioning cruise homewards.

There is a a bunch of narrow body aircraft heading to Ketchikan as I type, Celebrity has contracted with Miami Air and Sun Country to ferry people to Anchorage and Seattle.

I'm surprised there isn't a yard on the west coast (Victoria, Portland, San Francisco) that can do this? Maybe they're full, or the nature of the repair requires Grand Bahama's cruise ship speciality. Still, how will they transport her there? Seems like it might be expensive/dangerous to tow.

Ketchikan airport only has one runway. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

I'm sure it would cost a lot more for the work to be done in a US shipyard, which is the whole reason for Grand Bahama Shipyard's existence in the first place. Numerous cruise lines use that facility, which is also very close to South Florida where so many ships are based. MILLENNIUM is still operable, they just cannot make their scheduled itineraries, and I believe she will sail to Freeport under her own power.

KRBD Radio reports trouble with one of the ship’s two propulsion units sent the ship back to Ketchikan Sunday evening. Patty Rund and Rachel Pritchard, both from Minnesota, are two of those passengers, and gave a brief account of the trip out, and the trip back. Rund said, “We started out, and then all of a sudden, they gave us the announcement.” Then Pritchard elaborated: “We heard the ding-ding-ding-ding that we never heard before. Then … the head guy announced … that we were underpowered and that we could keep moving forward, but at a very slow pace, and therefore, he did not want to do that and made the decision to come back here.” According to an emailed statement – the only communication that Celebrity Cruise Lines was offering to media – the ship was still able to sail, but the captain wanted to be cautious and make sure everyone on board remained safe. The Millennium had been on its way to Icy Strait, but that part of the itinerary has been cancelled. In the emailed statement, Cynthia Martinez, Celebrity’s Director of Global Corporate Communications, writes that the engineers and consultants have not been able to resolve the issue, and the ship will remain in Ketchikan at least overnight. That means it will cancel its scheduled stop in Juneau. The Millennium left Vancouver, British Columbia, on Friday and was due in Seward on August 23rd.

From Events at Sea.

It's a long way from Alaska via the Canal to the Bahamas. They said they could sail but very slowly. Even though it's been a quiet hurricane season who knows what will happen enroute.

It's probably a pod problem again. This ship has them and has had issues previously.

In 2011 Royal Caribbean used the Victoria Ship Yard in Victoria, British Colombia, Canada to perform the Oasisizing of the Radiance of the Seas. Not being an emergency or even a standard dry dock, they could have scheduled the ship to sail to somewhere else but chose Canada. Seems kind of odd that in this situation sailing empty to the Bahamas and canceling all the cruises could be a better deal.

Will all this effect her repositioning cruise across the Pacific?
The Honolulu to Sydney sector has been heavily promoted down this way.

Re the Bahamas shipyard I seem to remember reading that the operating company is owned by several of the cruise companies which gives their ship preference for work.

Yes, companies like Carnival and Royal Caribbean invested heavily in this shipyard, which gives them much convenience. Previously they had to take their vessels to Europe for servicing, rebuilds, etc. Here is the website for the shipyard:

MILLENNIUM was slotted to depart Ketchikan today (22 Aug) with a scheduled arrival date at Freeport for 7 Sept. Celebrity has not said what will happen with her transcanal cruises and voyage out to Hawaii yet.

Nothing really to it, the 3 aircraft ended up doing runs to Anchorage and Seattle, so at any one time there was only one aircraft at the airport, bus the pax over and clear the strip.

At this point the ship is off Baja California and moving at 17 knots. It appears she was been running at 17k all along the coast .... and I thought they said she was having major speed issues????

How much faster does she run in normal service?

That seems odd. In my experience that's Royal Caribbean's standard cruising speed.

it was never a speed issue, it was a USCG issue. They were not going to allow her to sail with passengers with only one operational pod.

They are installing a new pod in Freeport. And the reason they are going all the way to Freeport is the pod is coming from Europe and the removal and subsequent installation requires a special cradle and machinery.

Still doing pretty good at 17k if she is running on one pod. Unless the wonky pod is working at the moment.

I understand why they went to Freeport for the repairs. Are they planning to remove repair and replace the pod in time and does that mean the one they are installing in Freeport is only a temporary loaner while her original gets fixed? If that's the case it means there's a second dry docking yet to be scheduled/announced to do the swap at some later date.

From the reports, it seems like the new pod will be a permanent replacement, and not merely a "spare tire" fix. The Rolls-Royce pod weighs 250 tons and is being shipped from Rotterdam, with arrival due on Sept. 3rd. It will take 4 days and some 50 technicians to do the work, followed by extensive sea trials. That seems very involved to be just a temporary fix.

I recall sailing in the identical Summit that they can make 24 knots.

The AIS seems to be intermittent at the moment but last report she is only doing 9 k so maybe that wonky pod is giving them troubles again or its also intermittent or they slowed down to go fishing in Mexico.

It does seem like it would be odd to make a temporary repair even though some of the language sounded that way. Good thing their is a spare around .... maybe they should start carrying it with them like the spare blades based on all the problems the pods have given them.
