CARNIVAL TRIUMPH broke lose from her moorings at the Mobile, Alabama shipyard where she is undergoing repairs. The mishap occurred during some stormy weather, and she collided apparently with other vessels/structures.

Photos being shown on various news stations show damage to her starboard stern superstructure.

The first listing for her on Carnival.com is a June 3rd sailing. That still seems far away, not sure that this will impact that date unless they were close on the other repair times and have no one to spare.

They mention moving her to the cruise terminal. Would she have been tied off any better there? Seems like it shouldn't make a difference and that would be harder to conduct repairs (not to mention pricier).

This will not be the last we hear from Carnival Triumph, just hope her life doesn't come to an abrupt end at the rate these incidents are occurring.

I like it when a Big Mouthed Senator carries on about charging Carnival for ship rescues when him and the whole other lot of Senators can't approve a budget or balance one. Maybe the Coast Guard should rescue them? I would think he is only looking to make himself look good?

It seems a very one sided report. In the same period, how many times have Carnival helped out others? How many incidences have there been in total where USCG assistance has been needed and how many times have they not been required as other vessels in the area have assisted. It must surely balance out more or less.

Seafarers help seafarers... the way it should be.

The Coast Guard should have the right to charge a cruise line for needing their assistance but it should be based on the results of an investigation. If an incident is found to be the lines fault such as knowingly sailing into a severe storm, setting sail with a failing part, or even over serving an individual resulting in them drunkenly falling overboard. If an incident is found to be a true accident, which the Triumph appears to have been, they should not be charged. In the case of the Triumph they have said it was a part with a 5 year lifetime that was just replaced in August (I believe) and inspected more recently than required. That seems like a legitimate accident that should be given assistance. Even in these cases though the expenditures should be limited. The Coast Guard should ensure the safety of the vessel and it's passengers but the line should be responsible for the physical costs of the tug boat and food provisions since those are decisions they can make a choice about (which it sounded like Carnival did pay for with the Triumph, perhaps not for the Splendor though).

The SS Norway had a similar accident against the pier in her August 2001 X Atlantic voyage from NYC.

It damaged her stern superstructure and was repaired quickly

Actually we should look beyond anybody trying to charge Carnival. I actually posted that article because of the amount of incidents, severe or not.
I like to see a comparison with any other cruise line in a 5 year period.

Now to those who are questioning how often Carnival helped others.

I would recon that this is would be rare if it actually would happen. On one of the bridge tours on a different cruise line the captain spoke of the Carnival fleet as the white whales. This is a term applied by captains and across different cruise lines cruising the Caribbean regularly.
He said further that when a Carnival ship approaches that other ships have to alter their course because Carnival would not do that and Captains on Carnival have to first get approval from Miami for any course correction. He also commented that this is no problem for ships who regularly cruise in the Caribbean as everybody is aware of Carnival ships and their policies. It causes sometimes problems with ships and Captain's coming from outside into the Caribbean Sea and are not aware that common maritime laws 'do not apply' to the fleet of white whales.

In light of such info I highly doubt that Carnival actually would be enough of a participant to other cruise lines incidents to make up for those 90 incidents.

To the credit of the Captain who volunteered that information: He was not very forth coming with that info as he did not want to 'talk bad about other cruise lines' (his quote). But a couple of us pushed that question. A couple of people who heard that bit on another cruise line wanted to actually confirm it. The question asked was: what happens if you 'meet' a Carnival Cruise ship at sea. The question was asked several times until the Captain 'spilled the beans'. Both people confirmed afterwards that the answer was almost exactly what they heard on the other bridge tour on the different cruise lines.

That's some impressive video. Didn't realize she drifted all the way across to make contact. I though she was originally right behind that ship and slid forward. Those two anchors did nothing to stop her.
