According to Optima’s weekly report Atlantic Star is now officially sold to a Greek-Miami based buyer (this must my Kyma?). The ship will be renamed Mona Lisa II and will be marketed by Lord Nelson Seereisen as rumors have been telling already quite some time.

Mona Lisa II is officially already booked at least to one Norwegian destination for 2012, but with this deal the ship could be ready to operate for Lord Nelson already during the summer season 2011. Let’s hope the ship’s previous machine problems could be fixed before entering to her new service.

Lord Nelson has previously only operated during the summer seasons (June-August), and Kyma has chartered the former Mona Lisa for numerous companies during the European winter season. With newer and more modern ship Lord Nelson could have potential to operate now even year round. The German market has at the moment even a minor gap in the segment with smaller cruise ships when the financial difficulties with Delphin Kreuzfahrten and Holiday Kreuzhfahrten has pushed them out of the markets.

I read on another site that she is to be re-engined w/more reliable diesel engines. The engines are apparently from another project that was not completed. If it's done, hopefully her attractive funnel will be retained.

The engines that were perhaps for ZOE? Who knows if they even work at all.

Not too sure who now owns the Zoe but she appears on the list of managed projects on the Kyma Ship management website.

Kyma were also managers for the original Mona Lisa.

Depending on a proper repair/replacement of the engines, this could prove to be the renaissance that this ship so badly needs! I hope everything works out!

Great to hear ATLANTIC STAR has a new lease on life. If the re-engine is true, I wonder if the cost of the project is worth it.

All,

Please note that Royal Carribean has still not confirmed the sale of the ATLANTIC STAR. As a publicly listed company they would have to report the sale of such an asset to their shareholders...

This could turn out to be like the Norwegian Dream where there is a disagreement about the price for the ship and her condition !

If she is bought by Kyma lets hope they do re-engine her as she could not even manage a round trip from Spain to the Canary Islands last time Pullmantur attempted to run her on a cruise.

Then the main problems were sewerage and air condition rather than the main turbines.

That is correct, but the technical problem was not related to her propulsion system so the same issue could have happened with a re-engined ship.

It appears that this very attractive steamship was run into the ground by her former owners or were her operating systems pooly designed? Does her contemporary the former Home Line's motor ship Atlantic have similar issues?

For what it's worth, Lord Nelson Seereisen has now officially denied that "Atlantic Star" is to be operated by them on the German market from 2012. The company has confirmed that it had been intending to operate the ship, but that it has backed out of those plans as possible costs for turning the vessel into a motor ship were considered to be "totally uncalculable" following an intensive analysis.

Raoul

Poor ship. Sensible decision, though. From a passenger's standpoint she has many fine features, but were I running a cruise line I would stay far, far away.

Lord Nelson's comment only makes sense if they were buying the ship. Katoufis was the buyer and he was going to charter the ship out and he would have had the cost of the refit. A year ago he said he had the diesel motors and would go ahead if he got a charter.

Since a mystery ship the size of the Atlantic Star was booked into Norwegian ports as the Mona Lisa II in 2012 it appears they thought the plan was going forward.

My bet is a fight over charter fees. I am sure Kyma is looking for top dollar charter fees saying she will be a "new" ship when she is ready but as was pointed out the problems are not just the steam plant but also plumbing, etc.

How much of these problems can be chalked up to the poor maintenance she got during the Princess/P&O days I wonder?

Even still with the people out there kicking the tires of other rusty buckets and looking at them for start up cruise lines one has to wonder if the Atlantic Star might not yet find deployment.

SSTRAVELER,

the question is whether Lord Nelson Seereisen actually intended to charter the ship. Let's not forget that they did not charter "Mona Lisa" from Kyma. Lord Nelson Seereisen "merely" served as a kind of "exclusive travel agency" for the ship (i.e. the only company / agency one was able to book its cruises through) and was represented onboard by a handful of cruise staff members only. This was in contrast to the company's predecessor Holiday Kreuzfahrten which had indeed chartered the ship prior to its bankruptcy.

Best,

Raoul

I wonder how much longer this ship can just be docked waiting a future assignment.

Will she be sold cheap enough (scrap value) in order for a new owner to afford replacement cost or re-engining or will she just be sold off for scrap at 27-years-old?

Ashame if she is scrapped as she is one of the best looking ships around.

She's indeed elegant lines with a rather "pure" profile. Her all red funnel is a bit strange because it stands out from the rest of the all-white ship, but it is always something to see her, especially since I remember very well when she hit the newspapers in 1984 with quite a buzz about the immediate closure of the chantiers that built her just after her delivery to Sitmar.

I use to see her nearly every week during the past two years or so when I go to the hypermarket (or once from a much closer viewpoint from aboard the ferry when departing from the harbour), but this morning, seeing her again moored at a desert quay brought me a sad feeling that her next destination may very well be the breakers soon.

I sure will miss her sight then, be it if she goes to the breakers or if she returns to active service, although the latter possibility seems rather far-fetched now to say the least.

Perhaps Lord Nelson Seereisen might charter the Alexander von Humboldt as she does not appear to be chartered in 2011 by Phoenix Reisen as they are buying the P & O cruise ship Artemis which is the ex Royal Princess.

At present she is in Genoa and now owned by the UK ' All Leisure Group' who do not have her listed in any of their own operations for 2011.
