Today Oasis of the Seas sailed though the Turku Archipelago under her own power for her first sea trial. Along with Oasis was the famous aerostat. The pictures are up on my Flickr Photostream from STX Media.

Wow - you really get how big she is.

If Titanic had been as big she would probably be a floating hotel by now rusting away in some awful corner of a forgotten waterfront somewhere and the iceberg mere little cubes of ice on the ocean.......of course she would not be famous so probably scrapped !

Wow. Great to see her in her element. A few observations:

1. The light blue hull is barely noticeable. I'm not really sure why they even bothered. If you're going to make a change, at least make it obvious.

2. The funnels are so short and inboard that they aren't even visible when near the ship. The camera must be quite far away to get a clear shot of the funnels and logo.

3. I love the stern. Looks so different compared to the boxes being built by most lines today.

4. The width of the ship is what seems so striking in these photos. I can't imagine what the inside of the bridge must be like.

...the hull still seems to have patches of undercoat on it? Not all of the lifeboats are affixed, but then not all of the passengers are on board either.

A strange look from behind. She looks top-heavy, and notice how much wider she is at the top compared to the waterline. Odd.

Well I must admit that from the stern she def looks a bit strange and very top heavy in appearance. Its interesting that in the older ship design the superstructure use to step in, now the just get wider as they go up!

Oasis is very nice. But I am concerned about how topheavy it is, thats definitely unappealing. It seems very boxy, and if you look closely it seems to look a little uneven and low in the water. Imagine when over 6,000 passengers and all that food and equipment are on he boat then it will be really low. Also CP and BW dont look as wide as the renderings make them look like. Nice ship!

I would have loved to have seen a 'straight down the barrel' aerial shot of Central Park just to see how much direct sunlight is getting down there.

I'm sure someone has worked out that it will be stable, but that is seriously top heavy looking. Wonder what it'll be like with a strong wind on the stern with that big hole in the middle.

I think we finally know what that mysterious round platform behind the Flo-Rider is for. Notice the large white balloon above the ship. It has a large gondola hanging under it. And in every photo the balloon appears to be tethered to the circular platform.

THIS IS THE BIG SURPRISE.

RCI has got something amazing on their hands here. A ride up in that balloon while the ship is sailing--what a view!

Richard Fain has mentioned this in
HIS BLOG HERE.

According to him they are only testing to see if the Aerostat will work, so it might not be there when the ship enters service.

I agree that the light blue hull paint is barely noticeable but that is a good thing!

I'm not a fan of light blue paint color but it probably was done to offset the massive white superstructure. Very cool images!

I agree the shot looking at the aft end is not the most flattering of the ship, and does make OASIS appear top heavy.

Of course this is not going to be the case, as OASIS is extremely wide, most of the higher decks are hollow on the inside, and the vast majority of the weight is deep in the hull (like on any passenger ship).

These days there are a million tests and computer simulations done before a ship is even built. It's unlikely there will be any "surprises" regarding stability during the trials.

The arial forward facing and side views are quite appealing. Not bad for the largest ship in the world. I do think the Freedom Class looks better, purely from exterior aesthetics. Kudos to Royal Caribbean though for designing something with a curves and not just a square box.

Her design is a unique element. Royal Caribbean designers are doing an excellent job and have done so ever since Song of Norway with the exception of Viking Serenade of course but this is disputable. It is amazing to see that these people still care about the design of their ships.

Remember VIKING SERENADE and NORDIC EMPRESS were acquisitions. They were not designed from scratch by Royal Caribbean so there wasn't much they could do.

There seems to be a jinourmous amount of work left to be done before she is complete, but we still have 6 whole months to wait. I am sure once the 'wrappers' are off she will look stunning both inside and out. I have seen that she is commanding some impressive fares, nearly double of the Freedom- and Voyager-Class's. I wonder if she will be worth it?

simply too big, too many people (pax and crew)

Yes i agree about her stern , but maybe we should wait until she is completed and all the windows etc are visible before final judgement is passed. I never liked QM2s stern on appearance either, but perhaps these ships do look better in the flesh than they do in pics.

That's what will all said when ships reached 80,000 to 110,000 gross tons.

Maybe Oasis will be regarded as a medium sized ship, within a decade or two.

So true Malcolm. I remember when CARNIVAL DESTINY was introduced as the first cruise ship over 100,000 gt. So many stated they would never sail on a ship that large, and some even questioned the success of building a ship so large. Today, CARNIVAL DESTINY doesn't even seem that large.

When I started working at Carnival, the FESTIVALE, at some 38,000 tons, was the biggest cruise ship in the Caribbean, and the 6th largest ship in the world. Then NORWAY began service and the nay-sayers said it was too large, would be a white elephant, and wouldn't work out--now that ship wouldn't even place in the top 100 ships in size!
