Bah. Why do they have to do this to ROTTERDAM? Such a nice ship, I like her the way she is.

I thought the idea to build up ORIANA and AURORA is dead due to the additional weight?

Theres the NORWEGIAN JEWEL-class and EURODAM-class ships that are flushed to a certain extent. They don't look too bad. Had VEENDAM's stern turned out similar to those ships, I would be 'okay.'

Slightly off topic but given the location of the aft pool on Oasis OTS - does the pool have a plug I wonder ? Would give a whole new meaning to a "flush" stern.

Could use it as a kiddies pool during the day - then pull the plug !

Apologies to all kid lovers.

I like you're version I see that you altered the back in a way that she fallows the natural line of the stern. Great!

I do think it is interesting that people are singling out Carnival Corp for designing ugly ships, when they are building what I think might be the most attractive newbuild out there the Seabourn Odyssey. She is very sleek and attractive, especially compared to her Silversea and Regent competition..

Let's stay fair: Yes, removing the pool just to add some inside cabins was very, very cheap. Adding balconies and the doors to the promenade decks is of course also about increasing revenue BUT it is actually improving these cabins. (assuming that having a balcony or a door that can be opened is an advantage - and I guess that's a fair assumption) What the effect of these doors on the promenade deck will be has to be seen - giving what I have experience on ships with cabins that have doors to the public open deck space it might not be nearly as bad as stated in some postings in this thread.

Troy, thank you for taking the time to post those.

Well I think we can all agree that it is a bad make over from an appearance POV, however I do think it would be kind of cool to have one of those aft cabins, just hanging out over like that.

So what is happening to the other Statendam type ships? are they getting the same thing done or has it been scrapped?

Its funny how things change from the time of Titanic aft cabins were steerage cabins for the 3rd class passengers.

According to all comments from people I met on Arcadia its upgrade and extra passengers actually improved the ship with more deck space and bar space around the aft pool. So it looks like that Vista type upgrade was a good thing. That ship felt very full and I would hate to have to be on it with upper berths full as it would be way too crowded.

Personally I am strongly against removing pools for the sake of extra cabins. If I were a HAL passenger it would drive me away. Facilities on a cruise ship are a very important factor for picking a particular ship to sail on.

I don't really have a problem with the extension to Veendam. Sure, she isn't the most gorgeous ship but the Statendam class isn't that great anyway. I've always thought that ships of a similar vintage and size such as Princess' Sun class were always more attractive.

It is disappointing that they took out a pool but I guess they did the sums and looked at their demographic and decided pools just ain't that important. I'm sure if they had Carnival's demographics the decision may have been different.

I expect changing from a regular to a wading pool will be quite popular. I saw the Veendam at Canada Place today, from across Coal Harbour, and from a distance the change doesn't look too bad, even makes the ship look a bit longer. The close up photos, however, reveal how unelegant the changes look, which is a pity for a ship that is fine to be aboard.

Thanks for posting the pic. I had not seen it yet. Definitely not as bad as the renderings, but I still preferred the old deck with a real pool.

I dont understand, do they fill in the light blue part with water also, and your lounge chair is just partially submerged?

Yep and you can put your feet in the shalow water and lounge. I happen to like it. Older people dont like swimming for a long time so the shallow water is all they need. In addition to the main pool thats all they need. I can understand why they put the ducktail on.

Cam J the added ductail is fore stability reasons. After the alterations they have done to here (the extra cabins etc.

The pool is not bad. Actually it's a trend to have such pools in trendy hotels to. I have seen several in brochures and in some hotels I have visit.
Is this innovation the first on a cruise ship or are there any other vessels with this sort of pool.

Greetings Ben.

QM2 has such a pool, although not as 'fancy' in shape and in addition to proper pools one can swim in. HAL could easily have installed an 'endless' pool for those wanting exercise in this area, as on BLACK WATCH & BOUDICCA.

Oceanic's pools were a sort of wading area....although they were deep enough to submerge. They were very small though.

Let's be honest...this is essentially a large baby pool like the one's offered at public parks for children still in diapers. Maybe HAL realized a high percentage of their passengers also wear diapers...although of the adult variety.
