Greetings Ben.

It was bound to happen, but I really thought it would take a little longer.
As stated many times here, the QE2 is an icon, but likely they hope QM2 will become another one (if you saw the crowds welcoming her...it is bound to be...)
39 years will be long lifetime, certainly if you compare with most of the (postwar) liners (I just read a SM-article of P&O liners in San Francisco, and most of them were scrapped before 25 years old...and looked certainly more oldfashioned than QE2 does now) .
I am really glad I had the chance to make a cruiselet on her in 2005 (before the announcement). I know of all the criticisms etc, but as it was something I was dreaming since my 10 years about, it was a very very moving experience : boarding her at last, and standing on her top deck, seeing the tiered deckterraces, strolling through her corridors, experiencing those promenadecks turned into indoor rooms, seeing those primary colored lights in the ceiling of the Queens room, searching for clues to her 3class past, etc...
As for Dubai, I don't know it, apart that there is seemingly an unlimited amount of money, which is absolutely necessary for her keeping in order. Restoring her to 60s chic, is more in line with modern dubai glamour, than keeping her in her present rather routine english (country) hotel decor.Still, nothing is definite, but there is a big chance of survival.
Is it normal announcing such a dramatic sale 1,5 years beforehand? Surely it is also a way of prepping up sales (l14 days ago I sawx a 650 EUR cruise on QE2 in July...). Now it will be 1,5 yearlong "farewell-tour" of the Diva... I don't think it will be pleasant, much selfimportance etc...
Still, I am 3 weeks younger than her (counting the official maiden voyage), and the news makes me feel now really old...
