i agree with debr on that one, Crystals' ships have very very nice atriums, they may not be big and sprawing like other mass market cruiselines.....but they are nice and intimate....i admire them....

Definitely Voyager Class for the best Atrium (s), especially when you add the main street between them.

OK but how about the WORST ATRIUM?

For my money, the worst atrium has to be on Arcadia: it's just a hole in the floor. No shops, no bars, no attractive staircases, just a hole with a few settees and a piano at the bottom.

Seems like they had finished designing the ship and then thought.............. darn - forgot the atrium. Best put one in, anywhere will do. Oh yes, and I must paint it brown just like the rest of the ship, so passengers can walk past it without noticing it.

Don't forget that the atrium is basically, just a whole lot of air. Doesn't use any steel, and doesn't make the ship any heavier.

Just shove the lounges, bars and cabins on the end of the ship: hey presto, your ship is even bigger and more imposing, and it only weighs as much as it would 25 feet shorter, with an atrium full of lounges, bars and cabins

'Atriums' are just a modern fashion. Many great ships did not have Atriums as such. As already noted the Queen Mary 2 nearly did not have one, and the one she does have is quite modest for her size. It's allso very tasteful - a rare thing.

The original 'Queen Mary's' Lobby/First class reception is far more attractive than any Atrium in my opinion.

I prefer an attractive lobby than a gigantic vertical hole which I regard as a pure waste of space. As for 'spaciousness' I rather they use all of that wasted space and added to more functional public rooms or the cabins.

I totally agree with Malcolms opinion here...WOW

I must agree the improvements in ‘creature comforts’ (private toilets and air con) are unlikely to be just passing fads. However, I do not think Atriums are particularly important to many peoples cruise experience.

On a big mega-ship I often only find myself passing through the Atrium on rare occasions, anyway. I did not miss Atriums on Fred Olsen’s ships, the QE2 and the SS France to name a few.

Although many people enjoy private balconies and pay a premium fare for them, especially in Europe, I do not think they are particularly essential to one cruise experience. I do not opersonally think TV are that important. There are still of course small ships without TV's in every cabin, the Van Gogh springs to mind.

To me the very definition of luxury is something that is a little bit better, that you do not need, but you have to pay a hell of a lot for it!

I enjoy a balcony in the Caribbean.

I MUST have the TV in the cabin for ONE reason....the "Navigation Map/Sea conditions/ship info" channel.

I'm talking about the current (Carnival) Arcadia.

Ocean Village / ex Arcadia / ex Star Princess ? ex Fair Majesty, a "pre Carnival-and-O" ship, has a lovely atrium: bars, shops, attractive balconies, and in her current incarnation as Ocean Village there are even trapeze performances in the Atrium.

Maybe a slightly ugly "shoe box" ship (although the new paint job improves her looks compared to the Princess/P&O days, and don't forget Sitmar painted patterns on the exterior of their ships too) but an excellent interior design which compares well against some newer ships.

Proof that I like the older Arcadia is that I will be flying out to Ocean Village on Tuesday for 2 weeks around the Med.
