I can't keep up with all of these newbuilds:

25th May 2005

NCL who recently cancelled an order for a new ship to be built at Finland’ Aker Finnyards, have now announced that Germany’s Meyer Werft yard will build the vessel, instead

The 92,000 ton newbuild will be the sister to ‘Norwegian Jewel’, currently under construction.

Malcolm, this announcement is not new. It was made a little while ago. The worrying aspect of this ship’s design is its forecastle and bow which from appearance is identical to that of Norwegian Dawn that had that ‘moment’ with a rogue wave in the Atlantic. I hope they have considered some modifications to those suites because the superstructure’s angle under the bridge forces water upwards and not so much to the sides. I may be scaremongering but I am not to keen with this design.

so this is the Pride Of Hawaii???....i thought that was being buiilt in one of the same sheds that Nor. Jewel is being built in.............or this is the new design that NCL had a lil while ago?????...i'm confussed

There were many factors in the Aker design which wouldn't meet the new SOLAS rules. Instead NCL decided to order another Jewel-class ship, which will be the 4th ship of the series (N. JEWEl, POHAWAII, early 2007 delivery, late 2007 delivery)

No, it's not the Pride of Hawaii as that is being built, as you said, along with Norwegian Jewel. This new ship is a sister to Norwegian Jewel, as pointed out by Malcolm and Keitaro. I was only referring to the design of the forecastle, bow and bridge area that is similar (identical?) to Norwegian Dawn.

Hi bulbousbow. The renderings I've seen, the forecastle, bow and bridge area will be the same. Only difference is the additional deck above the bridge.

Thanks for pointing that out Keitaro. So, basically the Jewel-class is the same as the Norwegian Dawn in that area of the ship. I just hope they made some modifications in that area because with that flat slant a huge wave over the bow can only go upwards into those balconies. Any renderings or a link?

That rendering of the N. Jewel looks good. The front looks longer than the other ships.

The bow looks very similar to P&O Aurora!

The stern looks boxy and the funnel looks lost, maybe it's because its fairly small.

I like the look of the bow, the balconies give it a clean look and it looks more sleek/smooth.

Does the funnel look too far back?

the forward looking balconies look even bigger than on dawn and star......NCL looking for more trouble as for green water going over the bow and fo'stle.

She is a beautiful box with a pointy end. And yes cruiseshipluver, I think the designers of this class of ships are looking for trouble if they hit another rogue wave bow first (and for that matter anywhere else on balconies - but that is typical of other modern day cruise ships as well, so...).
