P&O Ports has now closed off the tops of piers 88, 90, and 92 in New York completely to visitors wishing to view the ships as they arrive and depart.

"Security Guards" are now actively pushing people away from the piers. The only place left you can view the ships is from between the piers at top level or down below.

They are going to have a real problem on their hands when QM2 arrives.

The world has changed forever.

For example, we have not had a single trash can within the London Underground (Subway) train system, for years now. This is because the IRA used to use regularly them as part of their bombing campaign.

Regarding ports, the same situation is happening much of the world over. An amateur photographer at Southampton was told to put is camera away last year while photographing ships.

The funny thing is that if you pay the cruise line a few thousand dollars you are welcome aboard as a passenger. Now I do not believe for a moment that they do not carry out intelligence checks on every passenger. Terrorists have passports too!

All this is a sad reflection of the world we live in. The fear and paranoia that terrorism causes is so much more wide spread than the actual incidents warrant.

This isn't just P&O, it's world wide tightening of PORT security. The Port of Vancouver is going the same way. There has to be security of cargo from origin to destination or costs of checking will sky-rocket.

Terrorists are not stupid.
They will not take an Target, what is expected by their Enemies, they will place the next Attack or Bomb at an unexpected Place.

It is not possible, to control everthing and anybody...

This is indeed bad news. I am really wondering why it took them this long. I was shocked that I was able to walk right onto the pier tops when I was in NYC last May.

Malcolm, I know what you mean about the trash cans in the Metro! Try living in DC!!! There are so many security checks here that you have to be careful what you carry with you. I don't even carry a back pack anymore because I got tired of emptying it out everytime I went anywhere.

We not only don't have trash cans in our Metro system, but you are hard pressed to find a newspaper machine. And if you are looking for a mail box near the White House, forget it!

Recentley they erected a huge green chain-link fence across the entire area in front of the White House. Now the public can't even walk by it and the pedestrians have to go blocks out of thier way just to navigate around the damned thing!

Awe, for the days when the shipping lines used to "welcome" Joe Public onboard thier ships!

I'm just glad I am old enough to have been able to take advantage of those more trusting days.

back in the early eighties i used to go to the shipping agents and ask for a boarding pass to whatever cruise ship was expected on a curtain date......i've still got an old "sun princess" boarding pass from the P&O office and unfortunatly a friend was'nt able to join me.....good thing.....most people don't believe me when i bring up such a story......the only good place's here in vancouver is canada place cruise port which has the elevated promenade so most times your at eye level with the bridge.......and of course there the stanley park seawall under the lions gate bridge that has you sitting at least 100 feet away.....well it looks that way......on sunny days that's where i get most of my pics......jeff

Times have changed and it is a shame. I remember visiting my grandparent's cabin for at least four bon voyage parties in Los Angeles in the late 1960s all the way up to the late 1970s sailing on s/s Lurline and later s/s Mariposa. Wondering around those wonderful ships and never being questioned as to who I was now seems like such a simple care free time. Those visits and seeing the ship pull away from the pier with passengers lining the promenade and boat deck rails hooked me on ocean liners. Now you can't even approach the pier in Los Angeles as no visitors are allowed.

I completely agree. Bon voyage parties were a delightful component of sailing, back when. We had one on "France" in 1971, and one on "Nordic Prince" in 1975. But no more.

In the olden days, bon voyage parties in the cabin, with logistics pre-arranged by the stewards, were a delightful part of sailings. From NYC to Bangkok, any time we sailed from a port at which friends were in the vicinity, we threw a bon voyage party.. It was a blast..not drunken, just a helluva good time before "all ashore that's going ashore" was sounded. I don't remember the French announcement on MM but it was equally delightful.
Who remembers the last time they heard that call?

My parents, sailing on APL to Japan in 1955 reported that at Honolulu there was an additional announcement on the PA. "All hands check for stowaways." True, Nevadaflip can probably verify.

Then there was the time we had to smuggle ice aboard in Bangkok for our Bon Voyage party on,yes, "Cambodge.". I told this story on Midships lounge, back when, but I will repeat it if requested.

there is some good news regarding all this....the age of "no visitors aboard" is not entirely dead in
New Zealand......last year on the wonderful ms Amsterdam we had the pleasure of having four guests aboard through our all day stop in Auckland,
including having them join us for dinner......on mv Aurora last month there were many guests on board...I have spoken to several who had a conducted tour of the ship, followed by a full lunch in the Medina dining room....also last month the Silver Shadow whilst here in Auckland had a large group of invited guests for tour etc........its all a matter of prior organisation.....so, despite all the current situation.. it is still possible to enjoy some ship's hospiality as a guest... at least here in the South Pacific!!!...

For years I remember not being able to get near QE2 in Southampton. However I also remember driving dock a back entrance to the Docks and seeing Canberra from directly at the quayside. There was virtually noone around since it was one of those days in January between last cruise of one year and setting off on the Round the World trip.
Alot of other ports in Britain have recently closed access on 'Security' grounds. Enthusiasts in Liverpool in particular are having a bit of a campaign about this. See the excellent IRISHSEASHIPPING site. It seems that you can have access anywhere in the docks if you get an Angling permit though!.
This contrasts sharply with nearby Manchester airport which has decided that some of the best security comes from enthusiasts who are adept at spotting unusual activity. Such is their belief in this idea that they have opened a wider visitors space and put notices out asking enthusiasts to phone a hotline with anything suspicious. I hope the scheme is successful because then maybe ports can be persuaded to do the same.

Interesting concept. Do these enthusiasts have IDs issued by the airport authorities? If not, how can they monitor who is there? Need security on top of security. Paranoid isn't it?

Cheers

The worst port i ever see in my life is New York . INS want the crew on board 4 hours before the ship leave the port. I know a situation when a crew member "jump ship " in NY and all the crew members (over 1000) remained on board for weeks without shore live in NY and also no visitors . Common guys ... even the israeli are not so strict .
