Hi, that is quite normal as it is always: safety first.

Way back in 1959, on s.s. Rotterdam V, on an eastbound from New York to Rotterdam, we could not dock in Southampton because of a storm Beaufort 12. We stayed in the Channel until it was safe enough and disembarked the passengers by tender. As we were very late, we did not go to Le Havre and took all passengers with us to Rotterdam.

Regards,

Willem

Back last year on the Crown Odyssey we missed the ports in Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa because of Cyclone "Paula" We had 35/40ft seas and up to 80kt winds and she behaved very well indeed.

It can surely happen at any port but in my experience it happens more often at ports where you tender (Grand Camen, Playa del Carmen, private islands ect...) and even at that we have only missed three ports in thirteen cruises.

I think in this "age of the litigant" cruise lines are getting a lot more wary of putting boats in the water! In 17 cruises we have only missed one port--Marthas Vinyard last year on Caronia, when IMHO is was only a little choppy & I would have been happy to get in the boat!.
Once at a private Island they were taking an age to load boats & when we got onboard the mooring rope snapped with only about 20 onboard & off we went to the beach in spite of the huge queue waiting!.

Our experience too.

It always amazes me that some pax are really up in arms about it - usually people who would be the first to sue should a mishap occur.

Think we had 4 ports cancelled on one trip - each cancellation gave use a cruise credit.....did wonders for our onboard account!

On three out of 4 trips our stop at the Line's Private Island was cancelled because of bad weather.

I'd rather be safe than sorry!

Happy cruisin'

A port call (Ponta del Gada) was added to the Wind Surf's crossing in April when contrary winds caused her to run low on fuel. It was just for a couple of hours and after dark.

I imagine I've had really tremendous luck.

Ten cruises, only one with less-than-great weather, and even then it wasn't bad enough to stop a port call.

Green: Now that you mention it once was a $50.00 credit per cabin and another was open ber for a couple of hours during the day. Not a problem here its just part of the experience. I do also remember a couple talking about suing as they missed a dive trip on Grand Camen (I guess they should have flown in) we just got another Pina Co. and listened intently!
It does not take much to stop off of Cozumel/Cancun/Playa del Carmen as I believe there is only about twenty feet keel-bottom in calm weather. Gohaze brings another missed port to my mind as we missed Grenada when we invaded

In any case it's not just weather that causes missed ports. We missed Gib a couple of years ago because the taxi-drivers went on strike and picketed the Pilots office.
We've also missed Colombo a couple of times because of the terrorists - did get there eventually.

On a repo from the Caribbean to Europe on the Sunbird a couple of years ago, instead of going to Tenerife we went to Funchal, Madeira.

As far as I remember, we had run north of the planned course to avoid weather.

A great decision -- superb island.

In 1999, Hurricane Lenny forced a re-routing of our Veendam cruise - and a good thing too, as Lenny smashed into St. Kitts the day we were to arrive. Instead we took three days to sail from Ft. L to Key West! We liked the extra sea day and, having never been to Key West before, enjoyed the substitution [and that of Freeport for St. Thomas] - but some of the Florida pax were upset. As we changed course, were close enough to the edge of the storm thaat we saw waterspouts [ocean tornados] forming about a mile from the ship. Despite the re-routing this was a great cruise - HAL did everything possible to ensure we had a good time.

I have a port switched because of a hurricane. St. Maarten was hit the prior week and in bad shape so we went to St. Croix instead.

In Feb. of this year we were on a RCI private Island and were evacuated early do to high seas. The tender ride back to the ship was to say the least interesting. It was very difficult to walk the plank from the tender to the ship. One thing I always look for when setting foot on a tender or shore excersion boat are the life vests. The vests on this particular tender were not well displayed, and really doubt if there were enough to go around if one could find them. I really felt sorry for the person that was in a wheel chair tied to the railing on the forward deck of the boat, he had one heck of a ride.
