I'm going to guess that a Hurtigruten voyage might fit in this category of cruising....not your typical cruise experience. We are in Kirkenes Norway about to embark on the first leg of our Hurtigruten adventure in the North Sea. Stayed in a very comfortable hotel in Kirkenes called the Rica Arctic Hotel, our room is like an Ikea display. On our trans-Atlantic we enjoyed Business class on SAS which was awesome! Each chair in Business class can turn nearly horizontal at the tough of a button for sleep mode. Our dinner was great too, they offered us a menu to choose our entrée. I had the Halibut...mmmmm. The open fruit and cheese and chocolate and wine bar wasn't bad either. We board the Polarys today at noon!

It's not easy to find a category for Hurtigruten. Of course, it is the itinerary that makes them stand out and this is indeed 'not typical' at all. For some passengers it is actually similar to a cruise vacation for some it's simply a mean of transportation. The ships are customized for the itinerary but they are certainly ferries (or very similar to nowadays ferries) - exceptions would only be the old vessels like Nordsternjen.

Webcam of Nordlys (from www.hurtigruten.no):

Have a nice trip!

I screwed up, we are actually on the Nordlys not the Polarys. I'm having a great time, but my wife is in our "cabin" sick...she needs to be close to the bathroom. Seas have some swell and the ship (Nordlys) is pitching back and forth. The aft end shutters as the propellers occassionally come out of the water...I haven't been in seas with this much motion (pitching) since a storm in the Atlantic on QE2. I love it though! I've been told this is the roughest it's been so far this season. I can hear right now as I type this....sounds of things in the ship moving and shaking as the ships pitches back and forth. I'm surprised at how sturdy some of these older people are, as they ride out the movement of the ship. I tried to video the bow and do some commentary forward, but had to watch out for the spray from the sea crashing over the bow. There seems to be many Germans onboard and Norwegians of course. It is tough to categorize this ship, because it is a ferry (carries 50 cars) and it also carries cargo from port to port, as well as passengers. Some are going the whole distance from Kirkenes to Bergen others, like us are getting off the ship in Stamsund. We will be in Stamsund for three nights then we board the Trollsfjord. I'm trying capture as much relavant content as I can, audio, video and photos.

Hey Barry, hope you will enjoy it

We did it back in October 2007 - onboard Finnmarken - was Great. A heaven for seafood lovers!!
Not all ports were so worth to visit (some ports are being visited for only 20 minutes or so) but I really liked Tromso, Aulesund and Bergen...The price is also too hgh for Hurtigruten,,,

It's 3am and I cannot sleep anymore. It was a rough night. I felt like I was an experiment in a petri dish as I lay there in my bunk, with the ship bouncing up and down. I didn't get sick, and I enjoyed the movement, but at some point enough is enough for crying out loud. My wife is still sleeping and I thought I'd wander the ship, mess around on the internet. I'm wide awake at 3am, it must be because of the 8 hours time difference??

Dinner was too long and there are not enough waitresses to distribute the food in a more timely manner. I wasn't crazy about the food choice. I asked the waitress what the meat was in my soup and she said "Fish Balls".....I chuckled a little...I don't know if she knew how she sounded when she said "fish balls". Then we had reindeer meat...too gamey for me. Some sort of "cloud berries". I actually fell asleep while sitting at my table, and the waitress startled me when she woke me up. A combination of being tired and being bored as I waited for me food. My wife was sick so I had the table to myself. The crowd onboard is mostly elderly. Some from England, Norway and Germany. There was actually some entertainment on Deck 7 midship, two people playing keyboard and guitar. No one was in the room other than the 2 musicians.

There are indeed some downsides to Hurtigruten. They fall a bit behind when compared to other ferry operations (and not to talk about cruise ship - maybe not a fair comparison, but then they seem to try to become similar to cruise ships and are at times even more expensive). However, you will be rewarded by seeing beautiful Norway. Hang in there!

P.S.: Did you see Richard With?

Tough to "hang in there" when the internet is so darn slow. Trying to get use to the dinning, lunch today was challenging. We had a fun and short stop in Hammerfest. I became a member of the Exclusive Polarbear Society, got my certificate and pin too. Seas are much more calm, and my wife is feeling better today. It's about 35 degrees today, but we are tough Minnesotans so we easily adjust to the nordic temps. Last night I joking asked the purser where the Casino was...she smiled.

Don't forget about the 'cafeteria' - they should have some food too.

Also, there won't be too much that you can do at Tromso since you are scheduled to be there late in the evening - maybe you can use the time there to get something to eat ashore.

Good to hear that your wife is feeling better and that you could join the Polarbear Society (I remember that they once were closed during one of my visits). I am sure some of your fellow passengers can be persuaded to play cards with you.

Keep on posting!

We disembarked the Nordlys in Stamsund, rented a car and we are now in the quaint little fishing village of Reine, Lofoten. The scenery is spectacular here. We are staying in a beautiful & cozy Rorbuer "Boat House" for three nights. Then we meet up with the Trollsjord in Stamsund on the 18th to complete our journey to Bergen. We have eaten stuff from the cafe area on the ship. I love their lefsa..mmmm.

Here are some photos on my Facebook page for Cruising Authority.

oslo dutch, check your private message box here on CT.

I talked to the Hotel Manager and asked him if it's a cruise, a ferry, a cargo ship, or what??? and he said it is a hybrid passenger vessel.

The best description IMHO is Hurtigruten ship.
(they are finally ferries but don't tell them that - hybrid passenger vessels sounds much more sophisticated )

Thanks for the very nice photos of the birds. I am sure you know your schedule, but just to be on the safe side: Isn't Trollfjord scheduled to be at Stamsund tomorrow and not on the 18th?
EDIT: I just double checked. My schedule is in contradiction with the ship position shown on the webpage. Everything should be fine - according to the ship position she is supposed to be at Stamsund on the 18th.

It's our last night aboard the Trollfjord. The weather hasn't been good at all, windy, cold, snowy and rainy. On this particular voyage the theme is Edvard Grieg, who was the most famous Norwegian composer, and pianist Rune Alver is onboard. In fact he's performing a concert right now as I type this I can hear his piano playing in the observation lounge where they brought in a grand piano just for this event, I am told. I spoke with Rune, a very nice man, and everyone onboard seems to be smitten by him. He is an excellent pianist. Today I interviewed the Chief Engineer in the control room and discovered something I didn't know about the machanics of these particular pods under this ship which are actually driven by a shaft and gearing system as opposed to having it's own motor inside the pod. I believe there is a motor in the pod that is used only for maneuvering in ports. Strange set up if you ask me.

Oh, it's not strange at all.
It's called a Z-drive and is actually much, much longer around than the pods found on some nowadays cruise ships. Since Z-drives are limited in size one had to come up with pods that have the motor in them for applications where more power is required (e.g. larger ships).

You should have attended the concert instead posting here.

The 'Port Pod' on POLARLYS & sisters is retractable; just being lowered for manouvering in port. Is that the same system on Trollfjord?

Pam, no the Trollfjord has a pod under the ship that turns 360 degrees, and does not retract.

Here are some photos from a museum we went to that was fascinating! Maybe they should do this to the SS United States?

Yes, it's a different setup than on Polarlys. Polarlys has a retractable Z-drives for manoeuvering (like e.g. Prinsedam or Bahamas Celebration) and two propellers as main propulsion system. Fram and as far as I know also Midnatsol and Trollfjord have two Z-drives as main propulsion system (I know, some varieties of Z-drives are dubbed 'podded' propulsion systems these days like the Azipull thrusters used for Fram).

Are the tents on Finnmarken at the Hurtigruten Museum just motivated by the season or is that part of a renovation project? (I remember that I read something about a major renovation project being under way)
