Wow! What a wonderful list. I agree with most on it, but how come neither Jerusalem nor St. Petersburg, RU aren't on it?

Only been to 6 of the places listed, so guess I better hurry up if I want to see the others before my time is up.

Just realized the Panama Canal is not on the list.

Where does that leave me?

I think I'm one very lucky person to have been to and seen so much! - and hopefully, before my disc falls, will see a lot more

What about Scotlands outer Islands, Land's End, Panama Canal, The Yukon, Haiti, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Croatia........etc.etc.

Yes, the list is in order.

The list was very recently compiled by a BBC Travel prog. Based on the viewers votes. Obviously the list is very subjective and gives a British perspective on world travel.

Us Brits just love travelling abroad for our holidays, which probably explains why we omitted our own country!

America and Canada and popular destinations for us Brits even though they are at least seven hours flight away. You will see that both are featured in the list. The common language, the historical ties and cheap transatlantic flights probably explain this. It can be cheaper to fly from the UK and spend a weekend in NY than a European city!

Cruises only represent a very small percentage of holidays (5% I recall) for UK tourists, so this explains why they are not featured? Only a small percentage of Brits would have cruised the Carib or Panama Canal.

A wonderful list of places, though as mentioned in your last post, Malcolm, a very British view of the world.

A few places/experiences I would add;
1)Kyoto, Japan
2)Torres del Paine, Chile
3)Sail around Cape Horn
4)St Petersburg, Russia
5)Vietnam
6)St Helena
7)The Falkland Islands

As far as the original list, I'm well on my way to having seen them all (about half so far with hopefully many more years of travel ahead) with definite plans to go to visit another 9 of those in the next three years.

I hate to be picky, but #11, Lake Louise, is located in the Canadian, not the US, Rockies.

There are a number of sites in BC that warrant consideration, including Pacific Rim National Park, Gulf Islands, Haida Gwaii, Whistler and Vancouver.

Barry, you've got to be kidding! Why not just add "your TV, with a premium cable package" as well?

I do like your other additions.

You're thinking of the "Islas Malvinas", which is Argentina's name for the Falkland Islands, in the chilly South Atlantic.

The Maldives are much warmer, just off the South West coast of India.

Browsing through old internet pages I saw this thread. It is a list of 50 must -see places. I like lists, and it is always interesting to see what is on it, and what not

It is interesting to note that the Americas have 17 musts (English speaking 10 and the other 7), and Europe only 6 places, the same as Oceania.

I myself have been in only 8 places mentioned, but I think there could be other places, where I have been and where not. Mostly European of course, as I know that best.

About same places I have my doubts, Las Vegas, Barcelona , Dubai ?

This is my (not definite) list of places I would add : The Alps/Mont Blanc, the Norvegian Fjords, the hanseatic cities, The Alhambra of Granada,, Florence, Vienna, Prague, Cracow, Auschwitz, Istanbul (Aya Sophia), Jeruzalem, Vietnam, Tokyo, Kyoto, Ushuaia, Patagonia, Ispahan, Samarkand, Kruger Park,...

Is this list definitif, Or is something not worthy enough to be on the Famous Fifty List. I see Naples (Naples see and die) has fallen off.

What would you add ? It would give new blood to those same cruise routes.

It’s fascinating how us Brits omitted our own country from the list! I think as a nation, many of us now associate ‘holidays’ with ‘overseas travel’.

As Mec1 said, 'London' and possibly some other locations in the UK should really be included.

Surely, Oxford and Cambridge should surely be seen - seats of learning since many centuries.
Perhaps also Bath and Stonehenge, and one of those magnificent Stately Homes with their Gardens.
As Versailles is surely a must see - but that is in France

QB]

Holidays are very often associated with "abroad" and "as far as possible".

I spent last weekend, 4 days as a tourist in my own region, and I enjoyed it immensely, and could even look with new eyes to things that I had seen many times before.

Your own country is "exotic" for those from far away, so try to find it for yourself (says the pedant
)

I agree, London has so many must see sites. I think as jaded commuters we take for granted that they will always be there. We have museums as good as any in the World, a West End theatre area that is easily a match for Broadway and even (dare I say it) decent food these days.
But within the UK all sorts of stuff ranging from Edinburgh to Stonehenge. Having said all that, I can't remember the last time I even thought of spending a weekend away within the UK - going abroad is just so much cheaper!

One in general tends to ignore one's own backyard. Had the survey been carried out in America, I expect places like "The Cotswolds", Edinburgh, York, Stonehenge & the Blarney Stone would appear, along with the request for a night in a Castle One only has to read some of the newsgroups. Cambridge is lovely, apart from the tourists! & foreign students on English courses during the summer. Having worked there for a number of years, I never visit now unless I have to.

Just thinking of my backyard, of which I take no notice.. within a mile is Pepys House [I pass every day], <3 miles is

Hinchingbrooke House, Cromwell's Home, now my daughter's school. 3 miles, Buckden Towers, where Katherine of Aragon was sent by Henry VIII after the annulment of their marriage. About 8 miles

Kimbolton Castle, also now a school, where K of A died. Then there's Ramsey Abbey & St. Ives [the real one of the Man with 7 Wives ] & so on. All I don't even think about, they are just 'there'.

Ships?? None can make it here, but there's the infamous 'Ship of the Fen' which I see & walk past almost weekly, do I vist? Not for about 20+ years, yet coachloads of tourists visit daily, even during winter.

Pam
