Below is Southend-on-sea Pier from a 1960's post card. At over a mile long, it is the world's longest. It even has it's own train service to the head!
I don't know what ship that is? There used to be a number of pleasure ships (steamers) that opperated from the pier head.

An excellent report. As someone who has lived in South East London near the Thames for nearly 30 years it was very evocative and illuminating and, yes, you are right about Canary Wharf being like a mini-Manhattan.
