As cruising continues to grow in Europe, I think we will see other forms of cruising growing too, such as on Europe's many wonderful rivers:

In fact, next March, Peter Deilmann’s fleet will expand to ten with the addition of newbuild Frederic Chopin. The 79-passenger ship will focus on itineraries between Amsterdam and Prague, among others that include cities such as Berlin, Dresdin and Meissen.

What’s unique about this ship-to-be is that some two-week river cruise itineraries will be offered along with the industry’s standard seven-day voyages. Maiden voyage is scheduled for March 23. And yes, the ship is named after famed Poland composer and pianist Frederic Chopin.

More evidence, Dr.Watson:

There’s more evidence that cruise lines with hefty American presences are beefing up their European operations as P&O Princess announces it has spawned A’Rosa.

The new line, specifically geared to German passengers, is created around the transfer (next year) of the 1,950-capacity Crown Princess, whose new moniker will be A’Rosa Blu. Launch is expected to take place in June.

In addition, A’Rosa will add two new-builds -- interestingly, however, these ships will focus on the river-cruising niche and hold just 200 passengers.

Speaking of which, the barging aspect of cruising Europe’s rivers, long a very sleepy sideline, seems to be generating some growth buzz. Go Barging, a British-based operator, for one, has added to its fleet. The Magna Carta, a one-time Dutch barge built in the 1930s, has been refitted and will cruise England’s Thames, while the company’s custom-built M/S Serenite will offer a Berlin based itinerary. Both barges begin service next April; they hold eight and 12 passengers, respectively.

Malcolm,
river cruising is the fastest growing segment of the cruise indutry at the moment. alone on the mighty rhine river nearly 250 ships are sailing and the numebr is growing. US Travel company GCT for example has build last year 13 vessels in Holland. Not only Deilmann is expanding in germany so is Delphin Cruises planning three more ships.
Check out teh german website www.seereisenportla.de you will see many links under the heading>>Flussschiffe.
I have taken several cruises on european waterways and think there is no better way to see and enjoy europe!
