Hi! It is the first time I will be on a cruise and I need some help please!
We plan with my friend to go in the Baltic sea cruise with VOYAGES OF DISCOVERY.
Could you tell me if this company is safe and reliable? I found some comments about engine problems for last year and got quite worried!

Thanks

Hi Chrysi

This ship is now 37 years old having been been built as one of the original 'Love Boats' in about 1972 !

Last year she experienced a lot of mechanical problems but some new parts were made for one of her engines and she appears to be running OK again.

When booking a cruise on an older ship, much like running an older car, there is always the chance of a problem but mechanical problems can also happen with the newer cruise ships as well !

The company now has a new Managing Director who it is hoped will keep their customers more informed.

Last year it was reported that the first some passengers found out about the engine problems was after they had boarded the ship, at the start of their cruise.

A notice had been placed in their cabins saying that the ships itinerary had been changed !

Not a good way of keeping your passengers happy when some passengers book so they can visit a particular port or ports !

I sailed the twin sister in 2002. VOD has renovated the ship quite nicely. Her interior/exterior passenger flow and space planning is excellent. The ship feels spacious, yet everything is a short walk. LoveBoats are the prototype for the modern cruise ship.

The ship has a symmetrical waterbed ride unlike the stiff lorry like motions of a modern ship. The former less likely to cause sea sickness.

Do get a pair of seabands and ginger tablets just in case.

The staterooms are a bit small but functional. There are about 700 passengers so you are likely to get to know the people onboard well.

Bob is correct, all ships have mechanical problems regardless of age. On QM2 in her first season, a pipe burst over the Queens Lounge showering everyone during afternoon tea.

Rescue:
Most ships sail in formation about 10 miles apart. This is far enough so they do not collide yet close enough to help one another in an emergency.

Welcome to CT chrysi - every ship whether old or new, borrowed or blue, or whatever will have engine problems at some time or another [even some of the newest around have had problems]. Some are fixed pronto, others may limp around a bit on slow speed while special parts are made, which is what I believe happened to Discovery last year.

See this thread on a recent Discovery cruise and link from there.

Hi Chrysi,
Take a small torch each, those headlamp ones are good.
If the ship blacks out, beleive me it is very dark.
If you have 2 cases, make the second one smaller, so when you unpack you can just put the smaller one inside the large one and you only have to stow one under your bed. If you need a third make it a soft collapseable one and then you can put in the big one also. Saves you tripping over mty cases all the time.
It may be obvious, but take asprin, insect repellant, lip balm sunscreen and vicks. Down here vicks is the stuff you stick up your nose to releive sinus congestion. Often in hot climate and air conditioning you end up with head colds and blocked sinus. You can buy this stuff on board, but as we found it can be VERY expensive.
Have a GREAT cruise.

Thank you! Very good advice! I will definitely take these stuff and I haven't thought of the torch. It seems it could be very useful!

hilifta .....you gave some very good information, but that business with catching a cold because of going in and out of A/C is non factual. Just think about it: in the winter we go into heated rooms and then out in freezing cold weather without catching colds. Colds are caught from other persons, not from temperature changes. Check your facts or ask your doctor! Another example, Katharine Hepburn, the great American actress, used to swim most days all winter in Long Island Sound. Colds were not the result; astounded neighbors were!

Hi everybody,
I have sat back and kept very quiet whilst reading all the messages and notes regarding the MV Discovery. I am an officer on board the ship and I was on board at the time last year when we did have engine problems.
These problems have now been rectified totally and I am very pleased to say that the ship is travelling well with no problems whatsoever regarding her engines.
As a lot of people have said, a ship this age will have problems of one sort and another, but this is not limited to 'ships of this age' I have worked upon many much newer ships which have encountered many problems, but it seems that because of the problems last year and the way they were dealt with by a person who thankfully (in my humble opinion) is not involved with the company any more! and we do have a much more 'guest focussed' person doing that particular job.
MV Discovery is a classic ship, well loved by many guests with many repeat guests coming back for more cruises with us. I have no doubts that you will have a superb cruise with us.

Hi Neill

The most annoying thing to passengers booked on this ship was that the company knew the ship had engine problems, before she started that years UK cruising season, but according to reports from passengers the first they knew of the problems was when they found a letter in their cabin after boarding the ship !

This is no way to treat passengers when the company directors knew the ship had engine problems and may not be able to complete a cruise as advertised.

Other companies have told passengers when their ship have engine problems.

I have noticed that David Yellow, who was the Managing Director for Voyages of Discovery, appears to have left the company.

I wonder if his departure was connected with the complaints from passengers which have been featured in the UK newspapers and on the BBC !

Yep, I agree with you Neil, but as we have both said, thankfully this person is no longer with the company. I know that the company tried to contact the guests coming on board the ship, and during this time we did have specialists on board working on the engines and the engineers were always hopeful that the ship would be up and running ASAP. Regretfully that was not the case and guests were inconvenienced sometimes which was regrettable
The ship is sailing well currently, she is going to a scheduled dry dock in Barcelona in November where she will have work done to her both mechanically and in guest areas and so she will be in very good condition at the end of November where she sails on to the Far East.

Interesting to see that David Yellow has now turned up working with the Gerry Herrod and Voyages of Antiquity as their Managing Director !

Lets hope Yellow does a better job looking after their passengers and keeping them informed of any problems with the ship.

He had a lot of unhappy passengers when working as Managing Director for Voyages of Discovery !

Invitations to comment about the problems with the mv Discovery on a couple of the cruising websites were ignored although an invitation was emailed to him through the VOD website !

A number of passengers complained that they had been kept in the dark about the engine problems with the mv Discovery and changes to itineraries until they boarded the ship and found a notice in their cabins !

This attracted the attention of the local BBC radio consumer programmes and some of the national British newspapers !

You have made this statement a couple of times now. He did not 'just turn up', it was announced back in February that in April he would be leaving VoD to join Gerry Herrod. So has been there quite a few months.

Some may have missed it before if they were on holiday !

It does not alter the fact that he would not talk to the press or answer questions on some of the cruising websites !

Even the staff posting above, from Voyages of Discovery, says that things are better now he has gone !
