We are strongly considering a Med Cruise leaving Civitaveccia to Istanbul and back. July is ruled out since it is way too hot, too many kids, and ports are overrun with tourists.

The prices go down after September 1 and as Ernie Roller advises: a cruise is often better when school is in session.

I did hear that the Mediterranean and the Aegean are rough in November. Is that true?

How are the seas in October?

Partner wants calm seas.

thoughts please?

A Med cruise can be fabulous, lots of history.
Perhaps in May or better in June ?
The Med is really at its best when hot and full sun.

I agree Johan and would have said either the first 3 weeks of May [last week is UK half term break] or June, to beat the hottest weather. End of Oct can be coldish and windy, but nothing is g'teed and it can also be lovely. If one really wants that time of year the last 2 weeks in Sept/first 2 of Oct are the best bet imo.

We were on Galaxy in late June / early July this summer: 10 nights, Civitavecchia round trip, 7 ports of call including 5 in the Aegean. An itinerary to die for, but it was too hot for us - temps at or over 100 degrees a lot of days.

I blogged the cruise here:
http://tomtotley.wordpress.com/category/galaxy-2007/

Like others, I can see the attractions of autumn, but I would miss the longer light evenings. I think my ideal time would be May, but the Mediterranean itself is not so warm that early in the year.

I once did an Aegean cruise in end October 2001. Weather was pretty good even though it could be a bit chilly at times.

The Aegean can be always very windy and choppy. Last year in Mykonos the port was closed for several days due to the heavy wind.

Otherwise a great area to travel

We cruised in the Aegean and eastern Med in early November in 2000, and enjoyed warm sun and light breezes - perfect for sea time, and even better for tramping about various Roman and Greek ruins. Not sure if it was unusual weather for that time of year, but for us, close to perfect.

In 2003 Oct/Nov, admittedly further west, we were battered by storms and Palma closed at one point to all shipping. It can be very variable.. now what time of year was that video of Voyager taken - Feb, so no prblem there, too cold for the rest of us.

It's a gamble, may be nice, maybe not, there will be people having had all experiences. I would still go for May [if an option of course ]. What about CT'ers living in the areas commenting?

I seems I have been very lax in my attention to doing reviews recently, could have sworn I had one for our Grand Princess cruise in Eastern Med but must have missed it out!
Basically we sailed from Venice to Civ, sailing on 29th or 30th Oct 05. Easyjet flight to Venice was diverted to Trieste by fog at Venice who did not have their landing aids switched on that early in winter! After that weather was quite good, no problems as I remember it. Quite comfortable walking round all the sights in a sweater or light jacket. Only port we missed was Rhodes & I think this had more to do with our Captain not getting the birth he wanted than the difficulty in operating tenders. Rest of the day was spent on deck in swim wear in warm sunshine. Had a very good cruise with our friends from WA who wanted to see that area. I would go for it. I have an album of photos from that cruise on webshots.com user name is ericy202. Eric

I don't live exactly in the area but I'm not really far and I live in the same climatic zone (the Med). Anyway, I agree with Pam : in late October/early December it's a gamble. It's right in the transition (often rough here) between the hot and the cold months. To give you an example of how it can be unpredictible in that period around the Med:
-Aix en Provence November 10th 2006 (25° C in the afternoon, bright sunshine) (I kept the record...)
-Aix en Provence November 14th 2007, snow falls in the afternoon, -7° in the night (the coldest week we had in 3 years...).

More over, if every season are quite sunny in the Med, late September, October and November are usualy the months it rains the most (even if most days are sunny).

That said, early October (at least until the 20th) is still usualy quite warm, sure at 95% (but there may be rain). Between October 20th and November 20th, it's 50/50 it can be as well summer or winter (which are quite mild, most of the time).

Hi

Many of the cruise ships of Louis Cruises and various Greek cruise ship companies, which cruise the GreeK Islands and the Turkish ports, are now laid up for the winter months.

If they are not sailing then I would not think it is a good time for cruising in that area.
