We have only cruised one time and want to go again this winter with the family (five--the children are grown). I know two rooms would be ideal, but what would it be like to have five in the same room? I know Carnival can accommodate that many in a room. What are your opinions--pros and cons.

5 adult sized people in one cabin? .. unless it is a suite with more than one bathroom, book 2 cabins. If there is only one female, it may be bearable, but to be honest I just cannot imagine 5 people getting ready for dinner 'in shifts' in one standard cabin.

2 standard cabins can also at times be cheaper than a suite. It may spoil the cruise being on top of one another all the time, even if you don't spend any time apart from changing and sleeping in there.

Yes, Carnival can sleep 5 people in one room on many of their ships, but that includes installation of a roll-away bed each evening. The two lower beds cannot be configured to queen-size when 5 are in the room on some of the ships, there would be the 2 upper berths, and the rollaway takes up the remaining floor space. Heaven forbid that anyone has to get up in the night to use the bathroom--it's quite an inconvenience!

As Pam mentioned, 5 people trying to use the bathroom, everyone getting changed and ready for dinner, etc. would be a hassle. Far better to splurge for the extra cabin (and its bathroom).

Rich and Pam:

Thanks--I kind of figured it would be tight and not the best option. But I wanted to hear it from someone. The savings isn't that much. I just didn't know if the room would be bigger or how the configuration of the beds would be. Thanks for your replies.

barbiej.. here is a photo of the 2 berth cabin on Norwegian Jewel with a rollaway set up between the berths for the 3rd.. my mother, then 9yr old son and I suffered this for 2 nights.. any longer and I would have slept on deck With 5, you would probably have 2 upper berths with ladders coming down at each end... OK, not every cabin on every ship is identical, and in some 4 berths we have had, the 2 'extras' have purely been a pull out sofa bed where the cabins were larger.. there would have been no floor space left for a 5th person there though.

Nowadays where possible we have 2 cabins, and that's only 4 of us, with one child not yet a teenager.

5 in a cabin - no way, no matter how big the cabin is.

We took our 2 grown children (20's) on the old Rotterdam V, many years ago and it worked out fine - the room was huge - 2 lower beds and 2 uppers with a big dresser in between (the width was 4 sets of drawers wide - shower - no tub. We drew straws to see who would shower first before going to dinner.

It worked out fine for us as it was only 7 days, but there was no way we could have accommodated a 5th person.

Take 2 cabins - that way you will have 2 bathrooms.

Unless you have a "Family Suite" (and I don't know if Carnival offers them) - I would suggest a nice outside cabin for you and your husband and a triple cabin either across the hall or beside (assuming you have an outside cabin) across the hall would put the kids into an inside cabin - but this is NOT uncommon for families - for both comfort and most importantly - SANITY.

Thanks to pam, sympatico, jekyll for your replies. Thanks for the pic pam--good visual of a very full cabin. If you have three in a room are there any pullout couchs or pulldown bunks so you don't have to have three together on the floor? This is not explained when you book on line.

Hence the need for a GOOD travel agent. What you pay for in dollars can often be more than compensated by what APPEARS to be a good deal - until reality hits you.

I took a cabin for 5 with my family twice. Once on the Disney cruise but the room was 300 sq feet so there was room but it was tight the other was on Celebrity's Infinity. We were on a budget and wanted to go to Alaska and that ship fit 5 in one room that was 160 sq feet (OOHHH MY THAT WAS TIGHT-BUT WE KNEW IT WOULD BE). Since then we never took one room! But if your on a budget and dont mind why not.

Just to offer you some help (you may know this already):
-Carnival fits 5 only on the Celebration, Holiday, Fantasy class ships and Destiny class not on the Conquest and Spirit class

-Celebrity fits 5 from what I know on all there ships.

-RCI has some family suites that do

-NCL has some suites that do.

Please keep in mind you need to stow your luggage! There is NOT much room under the bed(4 bags if your lucky.)The closet is small and really only based on 2 people occupying the cabin. Check your cruise line booklet, some cabin vary in size eg. cabins with balconies can be up to 30sq.ft. difference.
Too bad you don't have 6 people then you could get 3 cabins(2/cabin) which in reality is much more pleasant, after all you are on vacation and don't need a hassle. Right?? You might even get a group rate??

My wife, 3 sons and I stayed in a family oceanview on our 11 night Panama cruise on Brilliance of the Seas last spring. It is listed at 320 square feet. It was a great cabin but our boys are still young - 7,9 and 11. We have also cruised with inside connecting cabins and there is something to be said for having 2 bathrooms and tvs. The price between the family oceanview and 2 insides were comparable for this last trip. I just wanted to have those big windows overlooking the bow. I think if my kids were grown I would definitely have a seperate room for my wife and I and the kids can have whatever cabin they can afford.

We went on RCI's Legend of the Seas from Southampton this year with five in a cabin, my wife and I, our two older children and then an 18 month old youngster, and we managed OK, admittedly it was a squeeze but knowing we were all going to be in one, we opted for a balcony cabin, and that was a god send, as it meant us as parents could have quiet time in the evening, afternoon etc just go out on the balcony have a drink and a chat etc.

Our bed was set up as a queen, then there was a sofa which rolled out to a double for the older kids and then a cot was provided for the little one.

We managed fine, although it was a squeeze and all of us had to lose our privacy for a couple of weeks but apart from that it worked well.

In an ideal world we would of had teh balcony cabin for us and the tot, and we woudl have had an inside opposite for the older ones, but it was just a difference in price, we paid £3K for all 5 of us, if we had had a balcony and an inside it would have cost us about £5K and even if we had had two insides it would still have cost a shade over £4K so we believe we done the best deal.

It suited us, but if you all enjoy privacy and need your own space then it is not recommended, otherwise go for it.

Good luck and hope this helped.

James

On NORWEGIAN DAWN I was assigned a four berth cabin although there were only two of us. I was surprised when I entered the cabin and saw only one upper berth. Where was the forth berth? I quickly found out when I tried to slide my suitcase under the bed. The forth bed slides out from beneath one of the two lower beds (in this case my bed). Not an ideal arrangement as the forth bed would take up what little floor space there is to begin with. What genius thought up this idea, and why? Did it somehow save money? In addition it would be like three people sharing one large bed although they would be made up as three individual beds. Even so, your face would be directly next to the person in the next bed. I guess that is ok if you are family but what about four friends? I wouldn't want it even with family. Too close for comfort IMO. Of course I also had to keep my suitcase at the foot of my bed the entire cruise as there was no where else to store it.
Very poor arrangement in my opinion.

Ernie
