HELP!! I've never taken a cruise, so I'm completely clueless. My dad wants to take my mom on a cruise for their 30th anniversary...and so it falls to me to make all arrangements! So...they're 48 & 52--not seniors, but not "wild" by any means. They're looking for a relaxed time--not into the club or anything like that, and want to go someplace warm. They also need a big boat (Dad gets seasick). Any suggestions would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!
-what cruise line?
-where to cruise to??
-where to find the best deals
-any other suggestions!
Thanks so much!

Are they formal or casual? Do they want to gamble? How much per diem do they want to spend? When do they want to go?

Holland America is a great choice. Their ships are medium to large in size and all quite elegant. The larger ones offer more balconies but many passengers like their slightly smaller ships. All modern cruise ships are stabilized but if you parents suffer from seasickness, have them see their doctor before the cruise and ask for 'the patch' or get some good motion sickness meds. Check out Holland America Lines' website for pictures and destinations.

Welcome aboard Redskline.

It’s a very broad question! It’s like me asking you ‘which car should I buy’.

Although you claim to have no idea what you want for them, I bet you know what you don’t want!

For example: If I recommend QE2's 20 day cruise from Southampton (return) on 30th of August in QG grade at a cost of about $150,000 per head, you would probably say: wrong port/country, too long and far too expensive!

You need to help us a bit more:

Where do they live?
Are they happy to fly to a port?
Would they prefer the Caribbean, Bahamas, Hawaii, Europe or elsewhere?
How long should the cruise be, 1 or 2 weeks?
If money an issue?

Okay, sorry. Like I said, I'm not at all sure about this cruise thing!!
They're pretty laid back & casual, but I'm sure my mom wouldn't mind getting dressed up a night or 2 (and my dad would just have to deal with it!) They don't gamble. My mom is in school right now, so although their anniversary is in June, they won't be going until January 2006. But Dad wants to be able to show her "LOOK! I booked us a cruise!" on their anniversary. Also, referring back to the "Mom's in school" thing, money is DEFINITELY a consideration. What's about the average for a fairly decent cruise? Oops, sorry, getting ahead of myself again! They'd probably go for 5-7 days, and don't mind flying to Florida to leave. We live outside of Philadelphia, so something leaving from NY or Virginia (I thought I saw that in my research) would be easy to drive to also. So I'm guessing Hawaii & Europe are out! They've never been to any of the islands. Mom's really not much of a flyer, and we usually vacation in New England (Cape Cod, Maine) but they don't want one of the northern or Alaska cruises. As for cost...I'm really not sure. Dad didn't give me a definiative answer...I'm thinking $2000-$3000 total? Is that reasonable? (Not including airfare). Okay, now with all that information....can anybody help me???!?!?!

Don't be sorry! I will give you a few general tips and leave it to our experts fill in the detail:

Firstly: pick a major cruise line like; Cunard, Royal Caribbean (RCI), Celebrity, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess or Holland America (in no particular order). I left out Carnival Cruise Line, because they may be too Las Vegas and ‘party’ style for them?

At least book them a basic balcony grade cabin. They are not the cheapest but they fitting for a special occasion.

A one week cruise is a popular choice.

Just about all ships operated by the above companies are pretty ‘big’ and have excellent facilities.

Miami has the most choice of cruises, but today there are many other ports on offer inc. NY.

Use the Cruise lines web sites to compare itineraries – but do not book via their web sites.
RCI have a very informative web site for example: www.royalcaribbean.com

If you are looking for good value RCI and NCL may prove cheaper? But do your own a comparison.

DO NOT pay brochure price. Do not book via the cruise lines own web site. As specialist cruise travel agent will give you a discounted price, cheaper than the brochure.

Don't forget travel insurance!

I think I'd send my parents on an MSC cruise to the Greek Isles, or Costa to Libya, and the southern shores of the Mediterranean, or the QE2 tot the Fjords.

In America, for first time cruisers, and for a special celebration, wouldn't the QM2 on a caribbean cruise be very fitting. I thought she makes sometimes 7day cruises to that area.

Welcome Redskline. My laste husband and I travelled on a HAL ship many years ago for our 25th anniversary..... we were about your same age as your parents. We had a wonderful time back - HAL ships are smaller than other lines and don't pack in 2-3000 passengers. They ships offer a more quiet relaxed atmosphere, good food and so-so entertainment.

Go to a travel agent and pick up some brochures on the Caribbean and check out the itineraries and prices.

Volendam and Westerdam leave from Fort Lauderdale and Veendam from Tampa. Look into these three ships.

You don't want to be flying out of NY in January - first couple of days are too cold and I doubt any ships would be doing a 7 day cruise to the Carib at that time of year.

Maasdam also goes out of Norfolk, VA.

If you choose a Caribbean cruise, it is also worthwhile thinking about what your folks are interested in. The islands differ greatly. Check them out and consider an itinerary that's a good match for their interests.

Okay, I've been doing my research based on everyone's suggestions, and I really thought the Norwegian Cruise Lines Freestyle Cruise sounded good. But then I talked to a good friend today, about the same age as my parents, and she said they (her & her husband) had taken one of those cruises and they hated it. She said the Freestyle is supposed to make it easier, not needing reservations & such for eating, but she found that wasn't true. She said they ended up eating at 10 pm every night because every place was booked up with reservations. And alot of things weren't included (food wise) so they ended up paying alot more $$$ for silly things like ice cream & such. She said the ship was beautiful, but everything closed up at 10 or 11 at night. So, can anyone tell me their experiences with Norwegian's Freestyle Cruises? I had pretty much settled on that, and now feel like I'm back at square one!
Thanks! Shannon

Cruising is very subjective! We have had both good and bad reports about NCL's 'Freestyle'. Some people love it, some dislike it - it seems to depend if you are a 'traditionalist' or not.

Check out our many readers reviews Here. You can check out a wide range of opinions by 'real' people, on your chosen ship.

Do let us know which line AND ship you choose. Not all ships, even in the same fleet, are equal. NCL tend tio be good value, but some of NCL's ships are more special than others!

We love Freestyle, and no the restaurants are not all booked up leaving you with an option of eating at 10pm. Depending on which ship you sail, there may be up to 10+ different restaurants to choose from, and only 3 or 4 of these will require reservations, and maybe 3 of those will have an additional cover charge. The rest are included in the cost of the cruise. One at least of which is 24hr.

If you turn up at the same time as everyone else, 7.30 - 8pm then you may have to wait a while to get seated.. but we have never had to wait, as always eat between 6 & 7pm.

Never been charged for ice cream.. alwasy a couple of hours each afternoon when its always been free.. Globaliser can advise whether a charge has been brought in recently or not.

If your parents would prefer the eat when you please idea, then NCL is a great choice. Everything is not shut up by 10 or 11, I think most people who have sailed NCL would smile at that comment There is no requirment to dress up on formal nights either, but we found the majority of people did. Less on the Caribbean itinerary, than in Europe or on a Transat where nearly everyone did.

NCL do however have a wide range of ships, quite different to each other. The older ships, Dream, Wind, Sea, Crown.. were not built with Freestyle in mind, and have been adapted. They do not work as well as those built for Freestyle. I've been on Dawn, Sun & Dream.. given in the order of the best experience

Pam

I guess, if it is their first time at sea, chances are high that they will like it. There are hardly any really bad ships around. Of course there are big differences, and it is well worth to do some research to find the cruise that suits them best. But as mentioned, this is very much a question of taste and other circumstances. Nevertheless, somewhen you will have to make a brave decision, and again, chances are low that they will hate it.

Check out Holland America's offerings from Norfolk. Not too far to drive and there are nice hotels there (get there a day early so there is not too much of a schedule hassle).

Norfolk it is not as hectic, nor as pricey, as New York. Check out the "Park and Cruise" rates from the hotels; and you can save some money.

I am on vacation now, and am using my host's computer, so I do not have the schedules at hand. Use the HAL website for information, but not, repeat not, for booking. Use their site to scope out shore excursions as well.

After reading all the replies I think you get the idea of how subjective some of this is. My wife & I are mid-50's and love to cruise. I enjoy HAL but I would point out based on my experience, at 50 you are among the youngest on the ship... not that it matters. As someone suggested before, Carnival is usually a younger and more apt to party (although lately they seem to be elevating their appeal to young families). Since flying may be an issue my suggestion may not work, but NCL does a 7 day cruise of the Hawaiian Islands and we loved it. Passengers were diverse... the pacific (Alaska & Hawaii) are not as party oriented as some of the Carribbean itineraries. We had an extremely good rate 2 years ago of about 4,200 for two including airfare. This was to celebrate our 30th... I am a fan of traditional seating for dinner, but we made the Freestyle work... and I might add that NCL seems to make this work better than most.

I agree with Cambodge.....I like the Maasdam
out of Norfolk. The only problem is you said
a 5-7 day cruise and the Maasdam is doing
a 10 and an 11 nights series. You may also
want to consider the Westerdam out of Fort
Lauderdsale....7 nights. Best of luck and keep
us informed.

Okay, I'm narrowing it down...I'm leaning toward the Royal Caribbean 7 day tour of the Western Caribbean--Belize City, Cozumel, etc. This leaves out of Tampa, which is perfect because Mom's dad lives just outside Tampa, so they could fly in a few days early for a quick visit before their cruise. It goes on either the Legend...shoot, now I can't remember, all my paperwork is in the car! I think the Legend of the Seas? Is that a ship? Or did I make that up? I told Dad I was sending him on the Posieden (hehehe) So, assuming there IS a ship called the Legend of the Seas...is that a good ship? I (and my Dad) want this to be REALLY nice for Mom.

Legend and Splendour (of the seas) cruise from Tampa. Both ships are more or less identical, apart from some decor. Although not new, they are nice comfortable ships. RCI offer good value for money in my opinion.

You can see inside 'Legend': .Click Here

Book them a 'Balcony' cabin if you can afford one. Remember you will get a price lower than the brochure or web site rate, from a specialist cruise Travel Agent.

The Norwegian Dawn does 7 day cruises to the Caribbean out of New York year round. Freestyle notwithstanding, NCL ships tend to attract a full cross section of passenger types with a variety of activities for each group so Pete Party animal and Millicent Main Line Matron do not run into each other.

NCL excels at entertainment where food can be uneven.

The Norwegian Dawn is a good seaboat designed for world cruising. I believe it is a good value for the money

I am using a cruise agent, a friend of ours. She didn't have anything really good to say about NCL, that's kind of what made me decide to go with RCCL. (Look at me, throwing all these acronyms around like I'm a seasoned cruiser ) I'm a little nervous having read all these reviews of the Legend & Splendour of the Seas...they weren't all exactly glowing, plus I see that they're fairly "old" ships. They seemed nice in the pictures, but it's hard to tell if these pics are 10 years old or current! This really has to be nice....it'll probably be another 30 years before they go again! So, honesty being the best policy, what do you all think of these ships? Malcolm, was that your review of the Splendor? Or was that another Malcolm?
