Last week, the stationery stores and Walmarts were full of smiling parents dragging around petulant kids.

This week, all of the teenagers who leaned against the walls in the local shopping mall propping them up all summer have disappeared. The walls remain standing.

Suddenly we realise. School is back.

For the uninitiated, right now is the time to pack the bags and get on the cruise ship of our choice.

Among other things,

Elevators are unjammed and continue working all evening.

Hot tubs become available and useable.

One can leisurely sit around the pool and read a good book.

One can dabble in the pool and make light conversation with others without being bombed.

No fear about tablemates, all are intelligent, can eat properly and the dillybars have gone home.

Best of all, we can now take that late night stroll on the darkened upper decks and look at the stars without tripping over the odd bodies.

With these possibilities we are off to see if there are any berths available over the next two or three weeks.

Topgun, I agree. This time of year is almost kiddie free.
My next cruise is Dec 1, 10 days on the Amsterdam. Hopefully the number of kids will be low. I did a 7 day last year on this date and saw only a couple of kids.
I hope you find one. I have seen lots of good sales lately.

Will this have an effect on cruiseny's output, I wonder?

Topgun, you should try cruising in the UK. We don't really have many (any?) child friendly ships! Families do not tend to cruise on mass...except Pam!

Oi Malcolm! Sunbird has an extremely efficient kids club ... you see children board, then don't see them all trip! Ruthlessly efficient!!

I went on a week's land holiday last month, to a resort on Corfu at which they don't allow under-16s. Bliss!

Except after three days, I was stir-crazy and wishing I was on a ship. And the no-kids rule didn't apply to the aircraft, which was full of them. Grr.

(Lovely resort on Corfu, called Aghios Gordios. CruiseNY, ever been there? ;-)

Malcolm, regarding your question above, I received the following Email today that probably answers it

Quote "Is our age showing when this kid drives me, Topgun and many others up the wall. You know the old adage "children should be seen and not heard"! Some days I would like to throttle him. He just never quits---------------etc"

I think I have it figured out. Someone is trying to drive us nuts.

Topgun,

You remind me of Mr. Wilson from the 1950's sitcom Dennis the Menace.
.

I have seen many adults who behave worse than 6 year olds. Thou doth protest too much.

Beezo,
Britanis,
Commodore,
Tiny Mike,
ChrisCunard,
TitanicSteve,
and motormouth CruiseNYfrom reading their posts are fine young people whom I would rather enjoy knowing on a cruiseship.

I have intergenerationl friendships, both younger and older. At a recent party, 2 friends 35 years apart were talking and getting along.

How is it done?
Agree to disagree, of course you will have different musical and clothing tastes. Understand that 'when I was your age blahblah' does not cut it since the rules of the game are different for each generation at a particular age. Come together on what you have in common and respect differences

From what you are saying here, it is quite apparent that you would find me perfectly tolerable if I were older... You have a right to that opinion, but is it much to ask that you keep it to yourselves?

I do have as much a right as anyone to be here, whatever my age may be, and the personal whims of other members does not change that.

I was afraid that this thread would (unintentionally no doubt) come to this subject... I only hope that it stays controlled for once.

I'm with you Topgun. I'm hoping the little darlings have all gone back to school for our two weeks on board the Sunbird this weekend. My husband and I have spent two weeks at "adults only" resorts every year since 1982 only after promising our boys that there will be money left to go to Florida for mid term. We left them with wonderful grandparents. Good Luck on your bargain hunting! I'm looking for a bargain cruise for New Years. Fat Chance!!!

Joe, the resemblance is fairly close.

Will you please however try comparisons with John Wayne or Sean Connery?

Contrary to popular opinion, brought on by his own posts, Topgun is very good with children of all ages and has a lot in common with them -
he dares to express what many others think.

I like children but prefer not to vacation with them, they're a bit boring.
Just as most younger people prefer to be with their peers and think of us as 'fuddie-duddies'.

Segregated vacations - wonderful!

Top-Grumple,

If you want to really stay away from children take a gay and lesbian cruise charter.

You will have to check if they allow male and female passengers with a marriage licence to share cabins though

Why is it that gays and lesbians can advertise a "gay special cruise" or whatever, but if you tried to charter a vessel for a "straight-only" cruise you'd be arrested.

Before anyone jumps in and accuses me of homophobia, I should point out that one of my best mates is a gayer.

Answer:

World assumes everyone is straight.

I AM SICK AND TIRED OF HETEROSEXUALS PARADING THEIR LIFESTYLE IN FRONT OF MY FACE!

Ask your mate what happens when he tries to walk hand in hand with his partner down the street?

Who has been kicked out of their home, lost a job, or housing for being straight?

Do you ever have to tell your parents or siblings?

Do you fear for your life from roving gangs who believe in mythology?

Heterosexuals are not a discriminated minority.

a gay/lesbian cruise-resort is a safe place for them to be who they are.

I see your point, and there's no need to SHOUT. But that wasn't my question.

I'm not objecting to gay-only cruises. But why only one-way discrimination? If gayers have the right to exclude straights, why shouldn't there be straight-only ones? Seems only fair.

I suppose what's really brought this on is the "I'm a gay, OK??", "I sleep with crew MEN, OK???" attitude which is having the gay lifestyle thrust in my face (!). You don't see straight people going around saying "I sleep with GIRLS, you gotta problem with that??" much.

PS desirod, pls don't take this too personally -- I'm not trying to pick a fight.

To get back on topic, we have managed to get space at excellent prices on Nordic Empress to Bermuda Sept 22.

We shall be driving to New York and using pier parking.

We should arrive at 11am at the terminal.

I am very interested to see whether, you, Cruiseny are like Hal of Space Odyssey in mobile form or really a 14 year old kid.

Both Ms Grumple and I will be pleased to meet with you. If we can, we could bring some of our famous Canadian lollipops for you, and some Cuban cigars for your dad.
