quote: Is this close to Durham (with the famous cathedral) and North Yorkshire? If so, this is a region I'd particularly like to explore : Whitby, Scarborough, Castle Howard, Fountains Abbey, York (Minster),...I heard somewhere this was rather close to Newcastle?
They're not that close, but not too far. The A1 - a major route - goes through Newcastle (OK, round Newcastle) but there are feeder roads to it, and the A1 will take you south through Durham to Yorkshire, and would be a good route towards Durham, York and Ripon (for Fountains Abbey). Or, I suppose, the A19 will deliver you to the North Yorkshire coast - Whitby especially. Scarborough is a bit further away, heading south along the same coast. Though it's not that great a place - I would probably prefer Filey or Bridlington as seaside towns (bother even further south again).
Of course there are attractions closer to Newcastle, including all the border country, the Northumberland coast all the way up to Berwick, and inland across the Northumbria national park to Hadrian's Wall. Lots of things to do, in fact.
It's a grand part of England, and not often visited.
