I intend to go by train from Civitavecchia to Rome at the end of my cruise and I've learned all about doing that, from the dock gate to Civitavecchia station and onwards, but the bit I'm unclear on is the very first bit - getting from the cruise ship to the dock gate. I gather that this could be quite a distance as Civ is a big commercial port.

I've read in various places that there's a shuttle bus from the ship to the dock gates/entrance . Does anyone have any information about this, ie how does it work, how big it is, etc? Is it provided by the port authorities, or by the cruise line? And is there a charge?

The shuttle buses are free, provided by the port authority, coach sized and run every 15 mins or so [except if the driver takes a break

] One bus will do the outer mole and leaves from near the entrance, another bus will do the far 'landside' berths and leaves from opposite the Ferry Terminal, [and a 3rd does the ferries from the Ferry Terminal]. You won't have a problem. The buses stop at the individual ships. You can always also get on the 'wrong' bus if you wish to take photos of the ships the other end.

The buses are very obviously marked.

However, 'Voyager' passengers were obviously unaware of & unable to see these. They were standing ranting at the tops of their voices about "How the hell were they expected to walk over there". I politely asked them which ship, "Voyager", and directed them to the correct shuttle bus; not a word of thanks, perhaps they thought I was a port employee with camera in hand.

How far and how much from airport to port?
