The city of Aomori owes its development to its unique position as transportation and distribution hub for the north of Japan. This vital factor also holds out great promise for continued urban development as Aomori heads into the 21st century. With a population of about 290,000, Aomori is an attractive modern city, bordered on one side by the Hakkoda mountain range and on the other by the sea and a fine natural harbor. Aomori enjoys mild weather throughout the year regardless of season. In winter the average temperature is approximately 2゚C and only rarely does it fall as low as -10゚C. On the other hand, snow is so plentiful that dealing with the yearly snowfall is one of the continuing challenges facing our city planners. Sitting at the southern end of the international waters of the Tsugaru Straits, Aomori is situated at approximately the same latitude as New York, Beijing, and Rome. As one of Japan's Northern urban centers, Aomori hopes to play an international role in circulating information about life in snowy regions.

Facing Aomori on the opposite shore of the Tsugaru Straits is the city of Hakodate. The sea has occasioned links between the two cities for a very long time, and with the completion in 1988 of the Seikan undersea tunnel(the longest such tunnel in the world), the two cities formally cemented their relationship by becoming sister cities. Thus the way has been opened to renewed economic development and cultural interchange. Now these two cities on the Tsugaru Straits are beginning to establish themselves not only as leading winter cities, but also as international centers for information exchange, tourism, sport, culture and commerce.

Holland America offers two shore excursions in Aomori;

Aomori City & Archaeology

DURATION: Approximately 7 1/2 hours
PRICE: $179 Adult $90 Child

Your first stop on this comprehensive tour of Aomori will be at the Showa Daibutsu (meaning "big Buddha"). At 70 feet tall, this landmark stands on Kuwabara Hill, and is the city's symbol of wisdom, kindness and inner power. The statue weighs 220 tons. Continue on to Aomori Natural Park recreation area, which showcases the Aomori Nebuta Festival, including 10 giant Nebuta floats on permanent display. You'll have a chance here to see the experience show and try festival dancing as well as handling the Nebuta.

After lunch at a local restaurant, visit the Sannai Maruyama ruins that date back more than 4,000 years. An exhibition room holds various artifacts from the site. Transfer back to Aomori city to visit the Tourism and Produce Center--a 15-story, triangular building that overlooks Mutsu Bay.

Aomori City Tour

DURATION: Approximately 3 1/2 hours
PRICE: $89 Adult $45 Child

Depart for Aomori Natural Park--Nebuta-no-sato--located south of the city. Nebuta-no-sato is a recreation facility featuring every aspect of the Aomori Nebuta Festival, including 10 giant Nebuta floats on permanent display and the Experience Show. Continue on to the excavated Sannai Maruyama ruins which date back to the Jomon and Heian eras (3000 - 2000 BC), the Middle Ages and the early Modern Age. Some of the most interesting ruins are from the Jyomon era. Then, transfer back to the ship through down town Aomori city.

ASPAM is a 76-meter high, 15-story triangular building that looks like the letter "A," for "Aomori," - That's the Aomori Prefecture Tourist Center: "ASPAM," a center built purposely to disseminate information on the prefecture. Here you will find everything you need to know about tourist attractions, specialities, and local cuisine of Aomori.

Tohoku Shinkansen “Bullet Train” services to be extended to Aomori City in December

Tohoku Shinkansen “Bullet Train” services will be extended to the city of Aomori in December with the opening of a roughly 80 kilometer section in northeastern Japan.
The Dec 4 opening of the section between Hachinohe and Shin-Aomori stations, both in Aomori Prefecture, will enable passengers to travel between Tokyo and Shin-Aomori in about 3 hours and 20 minutes.

One of the trips on my 'wish list', is the Volendam, Singapore to Vancouver in April next year, calling at Hakodate & Kushiro. If wishful thinking were to become reality (IF), it would be our first trip to Japan. It would be interesting to visit that area, especially as it is just across the water from us here in BC (just a little Pacific hop)!

That tunnel sounds interesting. How does it compare to the Channel Tunnel between England & France?

Thanks.

Graham.

The Seikan Tunnel is the longest undersea tunnel in the world with 53.85 km (23.3 km undersea) long portion although the Channel Tunnel between the United Kingdom and France has a longer under-sea portion with 37.9 km (23.5 mi).

The Channel Tunnel is a 50.5 km (31.4 mi) and deeper at 75m(246 ft) however the Seikan Tunnel is deeper at 240 m (790 ft) below sea level.
