open their new Shoreline Hotel today, built to resemble a cruise ship:-

"Located on the south coast in Bognor Regis, the Shoreline Hotel has a slightly futuristic, contemporary style with shades of cruise liner about it. The nautical feel is reflected in the room naming and Shoreline's stylish and spacious bedrooms range from studio level Hook's Cabins; to Columbus Quarters; through to deluxe Nelson's Staterooms ? many of which come with balcony and sea views." from Travel Quest.

See BBC report and Butlin's site with more images.

So has anyone down south seen this building? There are some good opening offers, but I think I will pass If you watch the video you can see the whole 'ship' facing out to sea.

But its flat frontage reminds me of the Pride of America.

I really like the building, and would consider it should I ever wish to go to Bognor...

Interesting. They should have named the hotel 'A Cruise Ship To Nowhere'.

Have you read some of the comments in the BBC article?

quote:
People go abroad on holiday because of the guaranteed sunshine, and to be honest it is cheaper. Going to somewhere like Butlins for a week, can cost just as much, if not more, as a week in Spain.
Sarah, England

It's going to take a great deal more than just window dressing to get people to want to go and stay at Butlins. The holiday camp has had its day... European destinations are so easy to get to and offer so much more than a static holiday with cheesy entertainments. I don't care how many kung fu monks you bring along, I shall head off somewhere more exciting and leave you all to it...
Sean C, London, UK

My wife and I had the misfortune to take our baby girl to Butlins in Bognor earlier in the year only to be horrified that the "Skyline" - their major entertainments hub was not "no-smoking". We complained but were told that is was ok as the roof is nice and high. Tell that to the idiots walking around holding their cigarettes at pushchair level!
Rod Horwood, UK

Bet it still costs as much as a holiday abroad though. Know where I'm going for my holidays and it aint to Butlins.
Mr D, UK

The comments are true, but there will still be plenty of people with youngsters wanting a quick no-fly break. The hotel looks quite nice, from the website anyway, all rooms & dining areas are non-smoking. The only thing is, you don't appear to able to just stay a couple of nights without being part of the 'Butlins Camp'. It all seems packaged into either 3,4 or 7 nights plus extra for the entertainment pass. I am sure there might be people who would stay a night or 2 to see the area, without wanting the entertainment complex.

I would not go to Butlins, but I would stay in the hotel if down there. In the faqs it says

"Q: Can non-hotel guests join me for a drink or dinner?
A: Non-Shoreline guests are welcome to drink or dine in the hotel - we advise that bookings may be necessary at busy times."

It's not clear from that if non-hotel guests have to be staying on the main camp, invited by someone staying at the hotel or if any Tom, Dick or Harry can stop by for a drink and look around?

I have never stayed at a Butlins, but have been taken for the odd day when a kid myself to Clacton, and taken my daughter for a day out when she was younger. The last day trip was maybe 10+ years ago at Pwthelli, and it was filthy. I wouldn't ever go back. The daughter however had a great time, and has also been taken by my parents for a day at Bognor, where they do have a fun indoor water park [or did].

I think Centre Parcs is the modern day Butlins, even pricier, as most activities are at additional cost and just as bad in most respects. Been twice in the last 3 years with friends.. that's enough thanks

Butlins are trying to change their image, and the hotel seems a good start, I wish them success with the venture, just not for me.

Bognor -I recall a relative of my Dad retiring to Bognor - my Dad's comment, "well the old '#*^^@% can afford it!" Difficult to think of a Butlin-like establishmet there. How times change!

Building looks OK but the name 'Butlins' still evokes thoughts of a structured, low cost Club Med. Guess I'll pass!

I seem to remember that Pontins at Heysham nr Morecombe had a building shaped like a liner. In 1969 I was so poor & with two very young children that we actually had a holiday there! Rather different from how we holiday now! or is it? perhaps just a little more up market & up to date but some of the same elements are there in cruising! Put Explorer of the seas on dry land & what do you have...an up to date Pontins at Morecombe! Eric

Did anyone watch Wakey Wakey Campers tonight?

Awful.. I got bored after half an hour and gave up.. the programme was too slow imho.. but crumbs, I could never live with staying there.. back in the 60's anyhow. Interesting to note in the introductions, those who went cruising for holidays

Was Bognor once a smart place Green? Butlins only opened there in 1960, so would have been long after your father's comments. Did you realise Billy B spent much of his teens in Toronto? [My Dad went to school with his son Bobby in Clacton].

Well, I've never actually been there but he was the only rich relation I ever heard of so I assumed it was upscale - guess it would have been in the very early 50's.

Never thought much about Billy B. Do recall Clacton-on-Sea, a favourite aunt lived there and as I recall there was a Zoo - think I had an elephant ride there

Colchester Zoo, quite big. Dad dragged us as kids back to Clacton for a week in a B&B [actually it was at the time of the moon landing so recall it well]. Had a day at Butlins, got taken round Dad's old haunts when he was a kid & spent the rest of the time on what were to me HUGE trampolines on the beach. The water was too cold for swimming.

Guests at the first holiday camp paid £2 12s 6d for a week

Volunteers wearing red jackets provided the entertainment
