Google has released it's mapping feature for North America. It also includes detailed satellite images for most locations. If you ever wondered what the port of Miami or Ft. Lauderdale really looked like, this is a neat feature.

Here's a picture of the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA:

Can you find other maritime related images?

I thought I look for ss Indy in San Francisco but apparently she was not there when the picture was taken (This is her current place right? Or am I looking in the wrong place?)

Right spot Onno.. she's not up at Vallejo either, nor is Golden bear.. so I don't know when the images were taken?

Miami is pretty empty, and a couple at Fll. It's awkward to find where you are, and sometimes get the unavailable image message, for the more off beat places.. but been having great fun playing... thanks Joe

Not sure of all locations, but some of the satellite images are 2 years old or more (even though the year shown indicates 2005).

Caronia II/Onno love that one.Yes, Jff1, it appears the images have been taken over a period of time, [maybe purchased from Terraserver?], but all interesting and I love roaming about the US. Shame more 'rural' places I know very well in MI, do not come in such detail as the coastal & main cities, but I guess maybe it will come eventually. I am still wondering where Golden Bear would be? Surely she would still have been around the San Francisco area? I don't know where though?

I got a bit 'lost' around San Diego, but eventually found Star of India, nothing at the Cruise terminal, but a bit further south is a very prominant navy? hospital ship with a big cross on her. Anyone know the name of her?

Thanks for posting that Onno... I don't have the ability right now to do image posts...

It was cool finding QE2 there though. I recall when that was as I wanted to head over and see her, but unfortunately didn't have the time...

Pam,
Think that the Hospital Ship is either the USN Comfort or USN Mercy. They are former tankers converted into Hospital Ships.

Anyone know where the nuclear powered Savannah and the Aquarama are laid up? Would be interesting to find those two.

Well done Onno
How could you find such a small ship?
What about ssIndy?
Think of the St James river for sisters ships of ssEmerald Seas(Atlantis,President Roosevelt,Leilani,General WP Richardson).
I wonder if Alang is on too?

In Canaveral 1, is that a Disney ship and an RCI ship? I've no idea what Canaveral 2 is?

#1 is DISNEY MAGIC and MARINER OF THE SEAS.

#2 is a Carnival Fantasy Class ship ... probably FANTASY herself.

Hi Pam, Lewis, et al,

At the time of these satellite shots the INDEPENDENCE is in the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet. The GOLDEN BEAR is at her dock at the California Maritime School in Vallejo.

If you search for "Vallejo, California" or "Mare Island, California", you can get a high view of the entire upper Bay area, including Mare Island, Vallejo, Benecia, and the Suisun Bay with the lay-up fleet. That will orient you and you can move to whatever you wish to see and zoom in.

The GOLDEN BEAR is docked very near the Vallejo end of the Carquinez Straits Bridge just entering Vallejo from the south. The INDEPENDENCE is on the right end of the third row of ships as you progress upriver (northeast) of the lay-up fleet. The first row has a couple of large tankers (the reddish colored ships) and on the right end of the second row is the battleship USS IOWA.

The IOWA was the lead ship of her class of four which included her more famous sister USS MISSOURI. During WWII my uncle was a Commander on the IOWA and was present when the IOWA and MISSOURI were side by side in Tokyo Bay for the surrender activities ending the war.

This is a fascinating site. I checked my house out in Nevada and from the look of the construction of homes and roads in the area, the pictures appear to be about a year or so old.

Onno, where is the AQUARAMA located?

Regards,

Jerry

The white ship in Joe's second post surely is the poor NS SAVANNAH. Sad story for what could have been a major fuel breakthrough in the commercial shipping arena.

Thanks Nevadaflip; I was only looking at Mare Island where I knew both had been. I had no idea so many ships were laid up at Suisun Bay.. [actually I didn't have a clue as to it's position in relation to Vallejo.. I know now!]

So this is Golden Bear? Doesn't look right to me.. probably still got the wrong place

Suisun Bay

Indy

What is the 'pointy' thing?

Pam..wasting too much time!
