Turnaround for Melbourne’s Station Pier
December 20, 2004

Melbourne will replace Sydney as the turnaround port when Crystal Cruises’ 68,000gt Crystal Serenity visits Australia on her 2006 world cruise.

The March 4 turnaround for the 1,080-passenger liner after an overnight in Sydney on March 1 follows a feasibility study by Select Tours md Jeff Mangano that was commissioned by the Victorian Department of Infrastructure. Mangano, who has organised an exclusive marquee at an international polo match at Werribee Park for passengers arriving in Melbourne February 13 during Crystal Serenity’s 2005 world voyage (Seatrade Cruise Review December 2004), reported that the Victorian capital’s location, airlift, range of hotels and touring options ‘makes it an ideal port for passenger exchange.’

It is a breakthrough for Station Pier manager Evda Marangos who said in an earlier interview for Seatrade that, as a fully accredited customs and quarantine station, the Melbourne terminal could be used as the Australian point of entry and/or exit for international passengers and crew. Marangos also said Melbourne is ideally located for cruises to South Australia, Tasmania, Sydney and New Zealand and the ‘ultimate aim’ is to home port ships during the Australasian season.

Could this lead to P&O homeporting a vessel in Melbourne?

This has nothing to do with scenery or what passengers enjoy while onshore. Read the following carefully:

It is all to do with Melbourne's location in respect to those destinations mentioned in the article. It doesn't mean Sydney will miss out on ship visits. Pacific Sun and Pacific Sky will still be based respectively in Sydney and Brisbane, but Carnival Australia (P&O/Princess) may well homeport a Sapphire or Diamond Princess in Melbourne for those cruises that include Tasmania and New Zealand. You must remember that Melbourne does not lack good transport facilities for the turnaround of international travellers.

I chose P&O, but it could be any other cruise line interested in the Australasian market.

Makeover pays off for Port Melbourne
March 23, 2007

The Victorian government’s A$15m (US$12,084,000) improvements to historic Station Pier have paid off, according to Port of Melbourne Corporation’s ceo, Stephen Bradford.

Bradford was commenting on the announcement by Dean Brown, acting md for Carnival Australia, that Melbourne will be the home port of the 1,950-passenger Dawn Princess from November 2008 through to March 2009.

Bradford said the 77,000gt Dawn Princess will be the first crusie ship to ‘call Melbourne home’ and said the Corporation is 'delighted' with the Carnival initiative.

He said all visiting cruise ships will benefit from the multi-million- dollar makeover of Station Pier and that the 2007/08 wave season, boosted by the presence of Dawn Princess, is set to break all records.

Dawn Princess will make her first voyage from Melbourne on November 20, 2008 -- a 28-night circumnavigation of Australia. Her inaugural Australian summer programme ex-Melbourne also includes three round voyages to New Zealand and three South Pacific cruises.

Sales for the programme open April 10 and ecruising Pty Ltd md Brett Dudley said he is already taking ‘expressions of interest’ from Victorians who want door-to-door cruising.
