My hubby and I just booked a last minute cruise out of NYC. We live in Virginia between Richmond and Norfolk. Any suggestions on the cheapest and least confusing way to get to and from the ship? It seems confusing to fly to NY and take a taxi and I am not sure which airport is closest to the port. Maybe a train? Anyones thoughts will be appreciated as we are not familiar with NYC and don't want to get lost or pay an exorbitant taxi fee. We are senior citizens who will be taking a large bag and a small bag each with us. Thanks in advance for time and consideration!!

Hi Rita,

Welcome aboard.

We live in Northern Virginia and have taken the train several times when sailing from NYC. It's interesting, relaxing and less likely to be disrupted by the weather.

From Richmond it is about a 6 hour trip to NYC (Penn Station). Senior rate is around $150 round-trip. From there it is easy to catch a quick cab to the cruise ship pier.

When are you leaving and what ship?

At Penn Station get into the cab line. It may take a few minutes but on the street, many cabbies will not pick up passengers with a lot of bags despite a remote trunk lid release.

The line is managed by a dispatcher and the baggage situation will not be a problem.

It is prohibited for car service i.e gypsy cabs to solicit in person inside the station.

I always have dinner 2nd seating on a NYC cruise so to watch the departure from NYC. Upon return I get up at 5am to see the sunrise over Manhattan.

Hi, Rita! Welcome aboard!

We recently took a cruise out of NYC. We flew into LaGuardia and for $15 each (plus tip) we took the SuperShuttle to the pier. We also arranged for the SuperShuttle to pick us up at the pier (for another $15 each) and take us back to LaGuardia. It took about an hour to get to and from the airport. It was very easy!

We will do the SuperShuttle again, the next time we sail from NYC!

Rita: How far are you from Richmond? That would affect my recommendations for a train or not. The trains originating in Florida go thru Richmond to Washington and to NY. But they are often late and there are only four I believe. There are even fewer trains from Norfolk.

Have you considered leaving home on the previous day, then overnight in NY, and take the ship the next day? This is what my wife and I always used to do when we lived in DC.

Anyhow, I suggest checking with Amtrak and see what they can come up with.

What is the closest airport with direct flights to NY? and to which apt in NY?
