Haleakala Crater (over 7 miles long and 2+ miles wide is several thousand feet deep) is dormant. It's the highest point on the Island, some 10,000ft++ above sea level - beautiful views! Lunch was included and also a stop at Maui's Ocean Centre
HAL's tour was expensive but well worth it. Wear good walking shoes and take a windbreaker - enjoy!
In Honolulu suggest you take the Pearl Harbour Tour - very impressive and well presented.

I found the north shore, on the other side of the island from Honolulu, to be more dramatic for scenery. Perhaps a driving tour goes there?
The view from the top of Diamondhead is spectacular, but you need a flashlight and some stamina to walk the steps up there through a WWII era bunker. Again, package tours will get you to the crater floor...you hoof it from there.
BE CAREFUL and READ THE SIGNS if you decide to swim in the ocean. Between currents and close-in shore break, injuries can happen. I had a close call that haunts me to this day.
