Not a cruise question:

Anyone been to Las Vegas recently? Has anyone done the bus trip to the Grand Canyon? Which tour company is best?

A funny side note:

On our last cruise, we typed up a copy of our itinerary for my mother-in-law. One of our ports of call was Grand Cayman. She looked at the list and said "How are you getting to the Grand Canyon? How does the boat get there?"

I was there last May but we flew into St. George Utah, rented a car and drove to the north rim. It was about a three hour drive back to Vegas from the north rim. All the hotels in Vegas can give you a lot of information about Grand Canyon tours. Your best bet is to check out all the glossy brochures when you get there and ask, most hotels have a tour information desk or can point you in the right direction. Just don't take the 6 second tour.

Malcolm,
A hint regarding the Grand Canyon. Great way to do the south rim is to take the rstored historic railroad from Williams, Arizona and stay a couple of days. You can then hike, ride a mule in to the canyon etc. Then drive from Williams around the Canyon through Flagstaff (stop at Montezuma Nat'l Monument to see Native American cliff dwellings) and then north to Zion National Park and also stop at Bryce Canyon, then go into Vegas from the north. Adds a few days, you need a car, but you will see a beautiful part of the southwest. Scenery and history included.

Vegas is a fun place, imo if you are looking for a relatively inexpensive place to stay on the strip with a great pool area, try the Flamingo (Bugsy Siegel). You can reserve online at parkplace.com

Thanks for the advice, folks! I notice that the Las Vegas shows are pretty expensive!

I took a few horse riding lessons when I was younger, but I'm not John Wayne. These did not extend to 'mulemanship'! Sounds interesting, though.

I love Las Vegas ALMOST as much as cruising.

And I don't gamble either! (well, maybe I drop my pocket change into the slot machines, sometimes...)

I echo the recommendation for Flamingo. Mid-week room rates are a steal. Very central strip location.

You know, these days, walking from north to south on the strip is like going from tourist class up to first class on an ocean liner. Up around Sahara & Circus Circus, the clientele has a distinct working class feel. At the far end, e.g. Mandalay Bay, the patrons are very swanky!

Also, unless something has changed, online booking at Flamingo gets you FREE tickets to their matinee topless review. The show is TACKY but fun, and did I mention it is FREE?

Speaking of Topless shows, that brought back memories of our second cruise when we stopped in Puerto Rico. A group of us decided to go to one of the shows that was listed as a "shore excursion" and featured a skating show as one of the acts. Well, it was a skating show alright - but the female skaters were topless!
and they even did some spins with the little tassles attached you know where.
We noticed that sitting up front with a couple of gals from either the beauty salon or the shops, was the Hotel Manager and another officer, in their civvies of course.
LizB - you probably know who I am talking about. We absolutely roared and everytime we saw these guys we had a good snicker.

Malcolm,
While I might have been presumptuous about the "topless" part you did mention that you felt show tickets were expensive.

We recently traveled to Las Vegas for a short four day trip. Although we did not make it to the GC, we did drive out to Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam, which was about a 45-minute drive from the strip. It was a nice take-in and worth the trip.

Next time out there we hope to take the helicopter or plane tour of the Canyon.

Cheers.

Malcolm: If you do decide to ride a mule do not worry about knowing how to ride. Those mules have been on the same trail so many times that all you will have to do is hold on and don't look down. The mules will simply follow the (ass) in front of them!
