Are there any railway enthusiasts out there that can tell me a brief history of it?
It was a good way to cross to the continent as foot passengers and was certainly better than todays bus connections via Dover Eastern Docks.
Anyone else got more info? Is there a web site about the old station (not the new Dover port)?

Yes Norwegian Dream used to use it, although they built a 2nd terminal(2)last year,nextdoor to terminal(1), which has a bigger passenger capacity.
Dream may well now use terminal(2), as she is a biggish ship?
