A very useful site, particularly if you are visiting Europe. I note the regular mention of McDonalds as having some of the cleanest restrooms. Whenever I visit mainland Europe, I ALWAYS search for a McDonalds so I know where to go when I need to go! - public toilets are quite rare, and most toilets in bars and restaurants are usually disgusting.

You didn't say where geographically - Yes McDonald's are good, but so are most restaurants in northern Europe at least. There is usually an attendant with 25 to 50 cents expected, no make that required. Gas stations do NOT have facilities except on the autobahns. There are no rest areas.

The Travel Channel had a show on last week about the top 10 public bathrooms. Some of them were quite interesting!

Toilets are my area of expertise - I've used them all over the world! However, one thing does puzzel me:

Why do you yanks insist on calling them "Bathrooms"? Do your have baths in yours then?

The reality is that they are "Toilets"! Accept it!

Mcdonald's Toilets are normally so very small. In busy branches there are always have a line of people waiting, especialy outside the female one!

The ones in the UK McDonald's are not always particularly clean!

Hello,

Malcom, that is a funny thread ...

I have never thought of the Corriolis Force in regard to toilets .

As for the loudest 'whoosh' I don't know. My latest one on Voyager of the Seas hardly wooshed at all. It was vacum, but was very quiet. Probably the very latest in toilet techology...

I do remember pressing the button, the clapping my hands over my ears and running out of the bathroom on cruises when I was maybe 5 or 6. The toilets on those older ships might have been louder...and I was smaller .

The matter of the 'large woman' - this is why if you go in a new ship you will note that the flush-button is located on the bulkhead behind the toilet, meaning that the seat cover must be down in order to reach the button.

The problem of this large woman has occurred numerous times on airplanes as well. Their toilets are usually even more fragile than ship ones. Unlike ships, I have experienced problems with the in-flight toilets, notably not flushing, and bad odors.

Oh, Americans calling toilets bathrooms... Don't ask me. I didn't invent our bizarre take on English... We call the toilet itself the commode, as in when we are shopping for one, and when we say we are going to use one, we say bathroom.

I especially like those Americans who call the toilet the lavatory ! I certainly should not wish to use a lavatory that had been mistaken for a toilet !

And then there is the matter of bidets as well...

Back to the original topic - I am not a fan of McDonald's toilets. Usually very small - they are intended only for patrons of the restaurant...

Here in the US we have the ubiquitous rest stop along our interstate highways and they often have filthy bathrooms.

Happy Cruising,
Cruiseny

:rolleyes In Canada we refer to such places as 'washrooms' you do your thing and then, hopefully, wash your hands!

A born Brit, I refer to 'washhand basins' - other nationalities think 'handwash basins' - do you have any comment on that??? :

To be really technical, I believe 'washrooms' 'bathrooms' or whatever you chose to call them are referred to as 'water closets'!

Who cares! - travelling to 'unfamiliar' parts of the world, seems to me it's comforting to have some idea of where a 'clean' facility is available. It's not always feasible to return to your ship!

Happy cruisin'
