Hello All,

We are considering taking the Brilliance Of The Seas for a baltic cruise this summer.

As the ship starts from Harwich we plan to stay in
London for 2 nights before the cruise.
We find London hotels to be very expensive. We discovered an apartment hotel in Canary Wharf area
that is less expensive. Does anybody know how is
this district ?

Thanks,

Sam

Canary Wharf area has many good restaurants and bars, very clean and safe. And you're only about 15 minutes away from central London by Underground. It's a business area though so some places will close early, once the office workers have gone home. But as a base for exploring London for a couple of days, it's ideal.

Canary Wharf is a regenerated dock area.It is very modern. As sread says its not really a tourist area. However, it is well situated and near the Greenwich Maratime Museum, one of my favourites. It has it's own Light-Railway (DLR) which links up with the 'tube' (underground trains) at Bank Station.

Staying central London is great, if you can afford the sky high hotel rates!

Sam, as already said it's a nice area, but in the main a business district and I'm not sure there will be a lot going on in the evenings. Malcolm will ensure you go to the NMM, and it is well worth a visit, but anywhere in London doesn't take long to get to using the Tube. You can take a river trip down to Greenwich.

IMO, one of the best places to stay is at the Travel Inn in the Old County Hall, across the Thames from the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, and next to the London Eye. A walk along the embankment at night is lovely, down to Tower Bridge and the Castle. There is also a Marriot in the Old County Hall but a bit more expensive. The Travel inn was around £65 a night, maybe a bit more. It's always fairly fully booked, but if you keep phoning you can get cancellations. It's not a plush hotel, just really a Sleep Inn type place, all you need I suspect.

It is in walking distance of many attractions, as above, and The Imperial War museum, another great place for a visit. The river trips to Greenwich, Thames Barrier, Tower all go from the opposite bank from the hotel. If you've not been here before, take an open top double bus hop-on-off from Hyde park corner to get your bearings. I could go on.

As an aside, what happened to the idea re the proposed ship to be turned into an hotel/restaurant berthed at Canary Wharf? We did have a thread on it a while back.

Pam

Hello

Thanks for the information. I think I'll take this
apartment in Canary Wharf.
