We will be cruising on the Dawn Princess in january which will enable us to visit Caracas for the first time. I understand we will dock at La Guaira. As we are not ones for the organised tours has anyone got any information about Caracas ? how to get there from the port ? how far it is ?

Thanks in advance.

If you want to visit Caracas, definitely go on a ship's tour. This is not a port where you should wander around by yourself. The trip into Caracas is about 1 hour. With all the muggings and robberies in this city & around the port, best to stay with a group.
We did the trip many years ago with the ship's tour and did enjoy it. The highway into Caracas was first class, but the road to the Glass Factory is not. Kind of a frightening trip, at least for me - bad road, very hilly and no guard rails at the side of the road.
Since that trip we have not ventured off the ship except to visit the stores at the pier.
Personally I don't know why cruise ships even stop at this port.

I completely agree - Caracas was a waste of time - the only reason they stop there is for cheap fuel. Our tour bus broke it's rear suspension half way to the glass factory but kept on driving. The our tour guide ended up lecturing us on the terrible American justice system and how wonderful Cuba is...
In unison we offered him his tip - "Don't lecture Americans on how bad our system is and expect to get money from us!"

I was on my Honeymoon-Cruise in 1987 in La Guaira, together with 600 Germans (from the Western Part of Germany) and 370 Crew (from Soviet-Union) on board the Motorship "IVAN FRANCO", Black Sea Shipping Co.

My wife an i enjoyed this port very much, but we took NOT THE TOUR TO CARACAS.

If offered, take one to the Rain-Forest.
It takes the complete day from morning until night.

Before we leave La Guaira at `11 ó clock p.m.,
we shopped in the Port.

At that time, the Venezuelan Shops are very cheap and give good Quality. Not only the Fuel is cheap there...

...this is my suggestion for La Guaira/Caracas.

La Guaira is a long way from'not much of anything' - stay on board and enjoy the ship!

If you feel you must go ashore, take one of the tours.

Thanks for all of your input. I'll be there on the ZAANDAM in February, but I think that I'll be taking the shoretour to Tovar. Does anyone know how that tour is?
