Is it easy to go and visit Rome from Civitavecchia using the train? We will be on the Legend of the seas, the boat will be dock on september 26 from 7am to 7pm. It will be for us a way to reduce expenses (canadian money). Or would it be safer to book an excursion like taste of Rome, (100$ US per person). Thank you for your help.

The idea to visit Rome taking a train from Civitavecchia is very good. There is a daily train that departs from Civitavecchia at 8.10 am arriving to Rome ( Termini main station ) at 9.18 am( the next one departs at 8.38 pm ).For the return there is a train from Rome at 16.12 ( it arrives to Civitavecchia at 17.19).
An excursion offers generally only a panoramic tour of the city so if you want to visit a particularly place or monument it isn't suit for you.The only thing to considerate is the fact that in Italy the trains often don't arrive on time, so be very carefully with the times !!!

If you haven't been to Rome before, I highly recommend a ship sponsored tour that takes you to the main attractions. We cruised there on Princess about 2 years ago and did this. Although it was a little pricey, we found it was worth it. We did some investigating about the trains before leaving home and learned that they don't always run on time, and if you miss it, well it would be a very expensive cab ride to the ship. Whatever you decide, have a great time in Rome - it's one of my favorite cities. Bon Voyage.

When we recently visited Civitavecchia, one of the organised tours was "Independant Rome". This tour delivered us to Peoples Square, gave us a street map and a free local bus ticket for any "J" bus, which run along the main city routes and get you to the main attractions. We considered this was a safer option than travelling on local trains which, as has already been stated, do not always run on time. We had most of the day to see what we wanted to see, but one day is not enough to see everything. The coach arrived on time to take us back to the port. The general rule is that if an organised tour returns late, the ship will wait for it - if you go on your own and return late, you can get great photographs of the ship leaving port.

Lise my wife and i took a tour to Rome from Civitavechia two years in a row.We booked the tour on board and found that both times it was well organized and the tour guides were excellent and included St Peters and the Vatican and also the Coloseum. We also had some other sites to see and the tour included a fixed meal at a hotel in Rome. The bus departed right from the ship and picked us up at the end of the tour and took us back to the gangway. I highly recommend this type of site seeing as you are in a group and it tends to be safer.
We had two Canadian girls miss the ship as they had gone it alone and didnt get back for departure time. They had to stay in Civitavechia over night and get a train to the next port of call in order to catch the ship. They were lucky as the port was in the same country so beware of taking trips that are not ship sponsored, they may cost a bit more for ship sponsored trips, but in general they are reliable.
Hope you have a great time on your cruise, i am sure you will.Good luck.

$100 sounds way too much to me for this excursion. Despite what is said above I would try the train as I am sure they run frequently (check in the German Rail website as it covers most of Europe) and you can always allow for it being late. Also they are very cheap.

Rome is a great place so whatever you decide to do enjoy.
