I appreciate that Cruise Lines use the port of Le Harve to run excursions to Paris etc. But if there anything worth seeing in the port itself?

Sorry to correct your spelling, but it is Le HAVRE - the other way looks like Harve without the Y.
Never been there so don't know what the port has to offer. You are so close, how come you have never been there? Don't answer that - I have never been to the CN Tower in Toronto or the Science Centre and I could walk there!!!

I've been to Paris a few times, and Calais, which is only 24 miles from the White Cliff of Dover. I've not seen much else of France!

P.S. I've had a meal up the top of the CN Tower! Shame on you.

I don't like elevators, especially ones like at the CN Tower. I think most tourists do visit the Tower.

I've been to the CN tower! Le Havre, when I was there in '46 had been flattened by American ships' guns and was not safe for GI's to be out in. The French were a bit upset with us even though we did drive out the Germans. At that time there was nothing to see but rubble.

To recap, what I want to know:

Is there anything to see on foot at the port of Le Havre?

We docked at this port June 25 on the Royal Princess. I didn't hear from anyone who did go into the city but here is what I have from the Tour excursion sheet and the Princess Patter.

The Princess ship docks in Le Havre approximately one and a half miles from the city center. There is a shuttle bus service offered for $4.00 each way beginning at 8:30 am and returning every 30 minutes until 6:00 pm. Passengers are dropped in the Le Havre downtown area at Parvi Saint Michel close to the commerical center.

Le Havre is not considered a tourist attraction in itself. It would be a nice lesiure day though.

We took the Normandy tour and really enjoyed it. The drive is 3 hours and is through some beautiful country.

Driving times to other places are:

Paris - 3 hours
Normandy - 3 hours
Etretat or Fecamp - 30 minutes
Honfluer - 1 hour

Sorry, I don't have more on Le Havre by it self

I visited Le Havre on foot during a September, 2000 port call on the R2. The town is small and is more oriented to commercial/business interests vs. tourists. Nevertheless, I enjoyed my visit there very much. The town is flat (easy walking) and can be covered in a half day. Highlights: Visiting two cathedrals, one of which suffered extensive bomb damage during WWII (and not yet fully restored; you can see pock marks from bullets on the exterior walls); the second cathedral is modern and has won numerous design awards---I believe the stained glass tower was designed by Chagall. The art museum is well worth a visit. It has hundreds of paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries, most painted by well-known artists, eg Monet. There is a coffee shop on the second floor of the museum where you can get snacks and just relax; nice gift shop on the first floor.

I enjoyed the port call as a welcome respite from the rushing around associated with tours. A lovely day.
