I have heard that American airport duty free is terrible, so would I be better making my purchases at Heathrow on my outward flight? And also, does anyone know if I can get duty free after my return flight to LHR, before my domestic connection to Belfast?

Paddy, all US duty free shops are expensive and small, I would use LHR before you come over, about the only thing you save in US duty free is sales tax. Now in Canada you save quite a bit.

I don't think so, because you bypass the duty-free shops on your return.

You will probably find that the price of Alcohol (and just about everything else) is cheaper in a NY Liquor store than at home?
You will need to carry your passport to buy liquor in the USA.

Which Hotel are you staying at?

Wouldn't think so Paddy - you've cleared Customs in London and are now in your own country - connecting to Belfast - flying to Dublin might be different.
