I don't know what time you will be sailing, but the event of the day is sundown at the pier. It is a great time.

italian cruiser - you are wise to skip the ship tours - wearing comfortable shoes just 'go walk about' - lots of nice stores and interesting pubs.

Enjoy

If you dock at the main pier, jet ski's, parasailing, dive boats etc. are all right on the dock. If you dock at the old Navy Base annex, the trolley will take you back and forth to town or the main dock for free. There is something for everyone there, very unique place, I prefer to think of it as a clean New Orleans. Shop for handmade sandals at Kino's, Key West fabrics and scents, many cigar stores and factories, T-shirts and trinkets, and do try the Key Lime Pie. Do take the trolley ride around Key West. Just sit at a little pub and people watch.

No need to do shore excursions. You can have a lot of fun on your own.
Definitely check out the waterfront at sunset. There is a nightly show by a Frenchman with trained cats that is lots of fun. There is a maritime museum in the same area with all the buried treasure that some explorers found on shipwrecks. Ernest Hemingway's house is fun to tour. Across the street from Hemingway's is the Key West lighthouse and museum, which are good to tour. There's a *lot* to do! Go exploring!
