I am thinking about a Norwegain Fjord cruise, next year.

Has anyone here been ob a Fjord cruise?

Has anyone been as far as Spitsbergen?

Has anyone been to Iceland (Reykjavik and Isafjordur)?

Any comments on Nowegian cruises and ports would be most useful. Thanks

Hi Malcolm - we were supposed to be on the Rotterdam VI last June to do the Norwegian Fjords, but unfortunately had to cancel. Our friends did enjoy it, but did find it very cold, which is expected above the Artic Circle. They are from CA and couldn't get over the fact that the sun never seemed to go down. I know that HAL went to Reykjavik, either this year or last. They normally do this Fjord cruise once a year around the time of summer solstice. I think there is somewhere from Norway (believe his user name is Norway) on this forum, so could probably tell you more. It sounds like a very interesting trip - much better than the Carib, which I am getting sick of.

Thanks Sympatico, the Carib is certainly NOT for us! We don't mind the cold. We've been to Alaska - it was disappointingly warm!

Hi Malcolm, We took the Coastal Express (Bergen Line) from Bergen all the way up and back - 11 days. It's a fantastic trip and most fun on one of the older ships. The seamanship handling them without bow thrusters is fantastic. The new ones sport much plushier accomodations but to my mind are more like ferryboats. If you like to rough it a bit, and forgo shows - your entertainment is seeing the light cargo worked in the ports - this is a great trip! You won't see Spitzbergen, and studying Iceland we have decided that it's better to tour that country on land, so we will one day. Next year we are going to the Arctic on a Russian icebreaker. We did the Antarctic last year on the Marco Polo - great trip.

Hi Malcolm

We sailed from Harwich on the Splendour of the Seas and did a 12 day cruise to the Norwegian Fjords and North Cape in June 1998.

It was terrific. The weather was quite warm - in fact in Tromso very warm, high 20deg C. The scenery is quite spectacular, although I found Alaska to be more so....Geiranger was the only narrow fjord we went to and the view from the lookouts above is amazing, as good as the photos you see in the brochures. We were expecting more narrow fjords but the majority were quite expansive, which took us a bit by surprise.

Seeing the midnight sun is something I would recommend to anyone....it is an unbelievable experience (and the only time the midnight buffets get almost as many people showing up as at dinner!!)

Our ports included Tromso (gorgeous), Geiranger, Molde (interesting), North Cape (very touristy and OTT but I guess you have to go), Bergen (terrific), Stavanger (the only place it rained but we visited all the museums and there is some fantastic history there). The only downside for us was it is hellishly expensive shoreside..at one stage we ran out of money and were only saved when we found some kroner lying in the gutter! We only did shore excursions in a few places where transportation was an issue. For us it was more interesting just to walk around the towns we visited and explore the histor of the place - most are small enough to do that.

The Norwegian people are quite reserved but very helpful and friendly and speak amazingly good English, although a lot of people apologised for it thinking their command of the language wasn't good.

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, as did my sister-in-law and her husband (who hates to travel) from Surrey.

If you decide to go, feel free to ask any specific questions and I'll see if I can help. :-)

Thanks Howarde, so what exactly is the North Cape like? (OTT in what what way?)

Is it worth doing a cruise that goes as far as the North cape - some don't?

What shore tours did you do? I suppose they are a rip off?

See my reply under Iceland. By the way, we did go to Reykavik. The lagoon is near there.

We also went to Stavanger, Norway. This appears to be a petroleum community. We learned a lot about the industry on our tour. The ship, Vision of the Seas (RCI) docked downtown.

See my response to your previous post for me which includes "On TV here last night, one of our travel shows covered a cruise to Spitsbergen. Wow!! it was a very good story and from what we saw we'd go tomorrow (if our $ was worth anything anywhere which it isn't!). The show is called Getaway and their website is www.getaway.com.au where if you're quick, you can see the video of the story, photos and the narrative, under Last Night's Show. There is quite a lot of info there".
