Looking for any suggestions of special things to do in the Canary Islands -- Tenerife, La Palmas, Madiera. Taking cruise in February. Appreciate hearing of anything special to do.

I have spent a couple of vacations in Tenerife and am leaving in 4 weeks for a 2 week vacation there, my brother has a villa in Los Gigantes on the west coast of Tenerife. This is a lovely volcanic island, some of the beaches are black sand, Mt Teide is the volcano located in the middle of the island and there are always tours offered there. The cruise ships dock at Santa Cruz the capital and an industrial type city. Playa de las Americas is the "touristy" type beach area with lots of things to do, Puerta de la Cruz on the north coast is very nice, but then I`m kind of partial to all of Tenerife. Make sure you check out the lovelt pottery and hand painted tiles, food and artifacts are really reasonable. This is also a duty free Island and liquor, perfumes, cigars etc are VERY cheap, hope you have a great cruise...........jean.

My husband and I were in the Canary Islands this past April. Find it hard to believe that there could be any violence there. We went to Las Palmas, Tenerife, Madiera, Lanzarote and Agadir (Morocco).

My first comment to you is that you may want to reconsider the timing of your cruise. In April, we were just at the end of the rainy season in Madiera. It rained part of the time we were in Madiera. Unfortunately, it was the time we were up in the hills. Still, the visit was worth it. It is spectacular. This island is owned by Portugal.

We also went to Tenerife, Las Palmas and Lanzarote. Each island has its own personality.

My husband and I enjoy seeing mountains, volcanoes, etc. The top of Tenerife is one giant crater. There is a tremendous national park in Lazanrote. Plus you can have a camel ride. Las Palmas is pretty, and we visited its inactive volcano. Las Palmas does have a nice beach, and we stayed in the Melia hotel with a balcony overlooking everything. Luxury at a very moderate price.

If you want more details, please email me.

We love Tenerife, we normally go for New Year. We stay in the outskirts of Playa which is about 3/4 hr drive from Santa Cruz, but the walks along the landscaped coastal paths are quite spectacular. In the south of the Island is the lovely town of Oratava where they make lace tablecloths in the old part of town where the houses are traditional spanish balconied facades. Mt Teide is the favourite excursion on the island, there is a cable car to near the top and you can walk the rest of the way.
In Madeira, the favourite excursions are Levada walks. The levadas are man made channels of water which service the towns from the mountains, that is a lovely way to spend 1/2 or a full day. There is also the 'toboggan' run which is in one of the villages, there are traditional wicker made sleds which are pushed down the hilly streets by two men in traditional dress. This is good fun and most of the cruises offer it as one of the excursions. The climate in Madeira is temperate so you should not experience any extremes. Tenerife should be lovely in February. We usually visit in Dec/Jan and it is around late sixties, should be warmer in Feb.

Forgot to add that in Madeira you will be offered Madeira wine to drink wherever you go! We stood outside a restaurant quite early in the day deciding where to go for dinner in the evening and they came out with glasses of the wine for us.

One of the other things for Madeira is of course tea at Reid's. The ships dock a short walk (about 10 mins) from Reids and their traditional afternoon tea is very popular, but probably not anything more than you would have on board the ship. Buy wicker and fresh flowers.
